  • Motorhome pitches on a farm site with views over the Ceredigion hills
  • Five minutes’ drive to Lampeter, and 25 minutes from Aberaeron
  • Peaceful, simple site just five minutes’ drive from pubs and shops
Visiting the offspring at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David? Or just longing for a quiet motorhome break with a back-to-nature vibe on level grass pitches? Either way, Lampeter Caravan and Camping makes a more-than-handy base. This small, family-run site has spectacular views over the Ceredigion hills at Maesypwll and is five minutes’ drive from the Lampeter campus. While you’re in Lampeter, pick up foodie supplies from the supermarkets in Lampeter, or if cooking is off the schedule (this is your holiday after all) there are pubs, fish and chip shops and takeaways galore for you to choose your supper from. Set on a working farm, the pitches have easy access from the main A475, giving you good connections with the coast at Aberaeron (25 minutes’ drive) or the indie shops of Carmarthen (40 minutes). Simple on-site facilities include a shower and loo block, plus recycling and waste-water disposal. With just a handful of pitches, there is loads of room for kids to let off steam safely and have a run around with (well-behaved) dogs.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The owner Stuart was very welcoming and couldn’t do enough for you. The site itself was clean and tidy. The pitches were very spacious enough for a Campervan and a large awning.

Disliked: The field was on a slight slope and there was not hard standing pitches which meant after it rained it was very hard to drive off the site due to the wet and boggy field, luckily the owner was at hand with his tractor to help tow you from the site. There is not really a road in and off the field so beware vehicles are likely to become stuck. A few campers had dogs off leads which ran a muck and tried to attack our small dog, not acceptable. The facilities ie toilets/shower's etc were very basic and not enough for a large camp site.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Facilities were really clean. It was muddy so the owner towed our caravan on arrival and when leaving with his tractor so we didn’t get stuck in the mud.

Disliked: Was very muddy due to the rain but I imagine in the summer it is a lovely site to stay on. There were picnic benches you could use to sit and eat at outside and plenty of room to play field games.

Electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner was very helpful during our stay! The weather for the first two days was very wet and the pitch was waterlogged but once we were set up it was fine.. some people got stuck and the owner used his tractor to help .. always had a smile on his face even tho the weather was completely out of his control! Toilets and showers were basic but immaculate.. great location for traveling to many different places

Disliked: Maybe could do with tarmac on the drive all the way to the pitches but this was only due to the wet weather! Pitch dried out quickly when the rain stopped

Bell tent

Liked: Stuart and Laura were lovely hosts and went out of their way to make sure we had a great time! The fields were large and our four dogs had a great time running around and playing! We had some great recommendations for dog walks, loved the dog friendly café along the high street and the nearby beaches!

Bell tent

Liked: We stayed in bell tents which were very comfy and clean. There was a decent amount of logs for firepit also facilities were very clean (cleaning lady was amazing, very friendly). Owners were very friendly and helpful. We loved our stay despite poor weather.

Disliked: Just a tiny advice - if bell tents would be placed on wooden floor it would be warmer inside and also floor would be even. But this is just our opinion :)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A quiet little camp site, 3 minutes from Lampeter town centre. Facilities are very basic, which was absolutely fine with us. Very friendly owners who spent spent a lot of time driving around the site checking everything was ok.

Disliked: Not a lot really, maybe add an option to encourage people to recycle. Seemed everything went into black bags. Field is on a bit of slope which can be an issue.

Local attractions

First stop may well be a day at the coast. Gather everybody up and head for New Quay (half an hour’s drive) with its cute fishing harbour and pocket-sized beach, or choose Aberaeron (25 minutes) to admire its brightly coloured houses and go swimming or sailing. At Aberystwyth (45 minutes) you can take a ride on the cliff railway for wondrous views over Cardigan Bay. At each of these ports of call, there are cafés and restaurants for revitalising after splashing around on the beach. Carmarthen (40 minutes) is a lovely spot to spend the day, with the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheatre, indoor artisan markets and lots of art galleries as well as indie boutiques selling jewellery and crafts. If you have time, take a detour to the Carmarthenshire County Museum in nearby Abergwili (40 minutes) to learn about local Arthurian legends. If you’d like to buy some Welsh souvenirs, plan a visit to In The Welsh Wind Distillery (35 minutes) to pick up some gin, or take home some local honey, beeswax and seeds from Gwenyn Gruffydd honey farm (45 minutes).
