  • Peaceful, spacious pitches among wild grasses at a Ceredigion farm
  • Aberaeron 20 minutes' drive; half an hour to New Quay
  • Campfire area for each pitch; shared fridge, freezer and kettle
You’ll be following in some famous footsteps if you book a break at Awen yr Awel – this lovely West Wales site is on a historic farm where poet Dylan Thomas lived and wrote during World War II. With a name that translates as ‘Breath of the Muse’, it’s quite possible the gorgeous views and peaceful wilderness atmosphere of this Ceredigion countryside site will inspire you to artistic endeavours while you’re here too. If that's not your style, you’ll be pleased to hear you can simply kick back and relax – this is a place where campfires are encouraged (with a firepit area on each pitch) and kids can run about freely in natural surroundings. There are just a handful of pitches at this site, each tucked away in its own little wild corner and surrounded by long meadow grasses for a feeling of real seclusion. As well as having access to your own campfire area you’ll also be able to bring along a barbecue if you wish – shops are about 15 minutes’ drive away in Lampeter for supplies. It’s an off-grid setup here, but you’ll have access to a shared fridge, freezer, kettle and charging sockets in the campers’ cabin, along with toilets, showers and a washing-up area. This is a Greener Camping Club site, so you’ll need to be a member (or add membership to your booking) to stay here. When not soaking up the serene atmosphere on the farm, you might like to get out onto local walking trails, explore castles and gardens or head to the beach – the West Wales coast is only 15-20 minutes away by car.

Heron non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Peaceful and relaxing site. The views are amazing especially the low flying kites that nest nearby. I can’t recommend this site enough

Disliked: We have a VW camper so not a problem for us. Anything bigger, and you will struggle to get on site.

Owl bell tent

Liked: A tranquil meadow that is full of wildlife. With long grasses and wildflower separating the pitches you get plenty of privacy, and also plenty of opportunity to be more social if you'd like. With a firepit on each generous sized pitch it's perfect for cooking in the summer evenings. A beautiful location with an excellent host and great facilities. I would highly recommend this site wether you're traveling solo or as a family group.

Local attractions

Heading out for a Welsh walk? There are plenty of rural trails in the local area, or you could set off towards Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest (for mountain bike trails and a red kite feeding station as well as walking trails) or follow the nature trail to Devil’s Bridge Falls – both are about 45 minutes’ drive away. For gentler wanderings, try the National Trust’s Llanerchaeron estate (15 minutes’ drive) or the plant-filled paths of Cae Hir Gardens (10 minutes). The Dolaucothi gold mines (half an hour) also make a good outing – as does the Fantasy Farm Park (15 minutes) for those with kids in tow. The Ceredigion coast is famously stunning, so it’s well worth getting over there at least once – perhaps to join a dolphin-spotting boat trip from New Quay (half an hour), eat fish and chips at Aberaeron’s colourful harbour (20 minutes) or visit the castle and pier in Aberystwyth (half an hour) before a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
