  • Coastal site on Ynyslas Beach, 20 minutes’ drive from Aberystwyth
  • Dyfi Wildlife Centre 15 minutes’ drive; Cambrian Mountains 40 minutes
  • Pool and Jacuzzi; play area and kids’ club; restaurant; dogs welcome
In a sweet spot on Bae Ceredigion, Cambrian Coast Caravan Park is a top spot for a family holiday – and your four-legged buddy is welcome, too. Just across the B4353 road from the site is Ynyslas Beach, a popular spot for fishing and surfing, though currents and incoming tides can be treacherous, so great care must be taken. Those wanting a safer option for their children point them towards the indoor pool; unleash them in the playground (with swings, slides and a small adventure course) or the games room/arcade; or sign them up at the kids’ club (which runs during school holidays). And while all that’s going on, grown-ups have a soak in the Jacuzzi or gather at the bar for a drink – or three. As for activities in the vicinity… well, take your pick. You could be practising your swing at the nearby golf course (which stretches along the coastline), or wildlife watching at the Ynyslas National Nature Reserve (half an hour’s walk away), on the estuary of the River Dyfi, where you might catch glimpses of ospreys and waders, plus lizards and dragonflies. Then, there’s hiking in the Cambrian Mountains (40 minutes’ drive to the east), where you can look for the source of the River Severn or climb up peaks like Pumlumon Fawr. On-site amenities include a toilet/shower block, a launderette and a drying room, plus a restaurant/grill and a food shop. The village of Borth, with its dining and shopping options, is a five-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Just outside Borth, The Animalarium (five minutes’ drive) is a family-run sanctuary where kids can take part in hands-on experiences – from petting and caring for animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, to feeding the resident wolf-dogs or bathing giant tortoises. Wildlife enthusiasts make a beeline for the modern Dyfi Wildlife Centre (15 minutes), which has a balcony with views across the reserve; boardwalks and an observation tower from where to admire the resident ospreys in season; and a room with live feeds from inside an osprey’s nest. Start your day in Aberystwyth (20 minutes) with a trip on the Cliff Railway, an electric funicular that has been transporting people to the top of Constitution Hill since 1896. If you just can’t get enough of historic modes of transport, the Vale of Rheidol Railway travels inland to Devil’s Bridge, a village amid lush woodland dotted with dramatic waterfalls.
