  • Small, friendly CAMC members-only site three miles from Thurso
  • Orkney ferries 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to John o' Groats
  • Easy access from the A9, part of the NC500 route; dogs welcome
Coming to the Caithness countryside as part of a road trip on the NC500 – or setting down roots for a few days to explore this lovely part of the world more deeply? Either way, Caithness Caravan Park Certificated Location makes a fabulous base for those in possession of Caravan and motorhome Club membership. This CAMC members-only is just a mile away from the A9, which forms part of the NC500 route, so t's a handy spot indeed for a stopover. The site is in a rural location, but it's only about 10 minutes' drive from the seaside towns of Castletown and Thurso (the latter being your best bet locally for shops and places to eat). It's a handy base for exploring the very north of Scotland – John o’ Groats is about half an hour's drive away, and ferries to Orkney leave from several nearby harbours including Scrabster (15 minutes' drive). Everything on site has been set up to make life nice and easy for guests – pitches are spacious and fairly level, and each one has and individual electric and water connections. Shared facilities include fresh water, grey water and chemical disposal areas, and although there's no wifi, the mobile signal is generally pretty good. It's a small and friendly site that welcomes kids and dogs. It’s not just human and dog visitors that enjoy visiting this place – it’s also a bit of a wildlife haven, where you may spot rabbits, roe deer and foxes as well as birds like owls, red kites, sea eagles and kestrels.

Electric grass touring pitch (members only)

Liked: There was nothing to like here

Disliked: This was only a field. The owners dogs kept barking and in the morning there was a strange man walking up the lane picked up his phone from the lane and walked back to the house. When my husband walked the dog up to the road there was another man lying in the lane. These were staying at the house. There was another motorhome there when we were there we both were ment to be staying for 2 nights but only stayed for one night.

From the manager: Hi, in response to your review I would like to address the following: 1. This is only advertised as a field, as seen in the photos on the listing. Each pitch has its own ehu and water, which us not standard at every campsite. We also have grey water disposal and chemical toilet disposal, plus recycling and general waste bins. 2. At the time you stayed, there were two campers onsite, plus a caravan which was staying for two weeks. In the caravan was a gentleman with learning disabilities who was making loud noises (not a problem), and this did make the dogs react and bark. If you had raised this issue with me in person I would have sorted it out or offered you a full refund. 3. There was no-one staying at the house. The man walking up the lane was staying in the caravan, and possibly dropped his phone while walking his dog and went back to retrieve it. Not sure why this was a problem for you? As for the man 'lying' in the road, I have asked all neighbours and no-one can corroborate this at all. Maybe this is a fabrication on your part? 4. The other camper staying at the same time as you were booked in for one night, as they were travelling to Orkney the next morning. This appears to be another fabrication on your part. I'm sorry you had a disappointing stay, but again if you had addressed this issue at the time I would have been more than happy to help or refund your payment. It would appear that the only actual problem you encountered was the dog noise. To reiterate, this was triggered by the noise made by the chap with downs syndrome staying in the caravan, and is not typical for my dogs. I have received all 10/10 reviews before and since your stay, which I feel accurately reflects my customer service.

Electric grass touring pitch (members only)

Liked: We liked David our host, we liked the seclusion, quiet and the site itself with its exceptional views. Beautifully maintained grass, sizeable pitches, extremely dog friendly, great for couples and families. David couldn’t do enough for us, super friendly, with fabulous pooches. Ideally located for the Orkney ferry but likewise as a destination in itself. Highly recommend.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Electric grass touring pitch (members only)

Liked: This site had 6 electric hookups and we could arrive at any time. This was really helpful when our battery was running low and our water pump, fridge and lights had shut down. Grass pitches are in excellent condition, there was place to dispose of recycling, grey water and fill up with drinking water. There was a trampoline for our 8 year old and a swingball. Thanks very much.
