  • Luxury glass-fronted lodges with views towards Orkney
  • A 15-minute walk from the John O'Groats sign, café and ferry
  • Woodburning stove, well-equipped kitchen and TV with games console
John O’Groats… a name forever synonymous with epic journeys across the entire length of the country from Land’s End, some 900 miles away. Certainly the promise of a stay in one of Together Travel’s swish lodges would be an excellent incentive to keep plodding or pedalling towards your final destination, but there’s an equally warm welcome for those who’ve taken the easier route and driven to this luxury Caithness glamping site. However you’ve chosen to venture to this very northernmost part of Great Britain, arrival at your gorgeous glass-fronted temporary home is bound to be a most cheering experience. And with good reason – those huge sliding windows bring in oodles of natural light, and comfy sofas have been positioned to make the most of the view towards Orkney. Haul yourself away from that prime gawping spot (just briefly) and you’ll note that these smart lodges have been packed full of thoughtful touches, including a fully-fitted kitchen, a woodburning stove and a docking station to sort out suitably wave-themed songs as you stare out to sea. For a break from scenery viewing (or when you have to give in and admit it’s dark outside), turn attentions to the TV, which has been set up with movie streaming service and a games console. Walks and wildlife-spotting are popular pastimes around here, so it’s likely that you’ll want to make use of the specially designed boot room for sandy shoes/mucky wellies that arise from such outings. If you’ve come back in need of coffee and snacks, stroll over to the local café, a few minutes away, for eats and drinks (and more sea views, of course…).

Local attractions

Clearly, if you’re only going to do one thing, it should be having your pic snapped with the famed John O’Groats signpost, 15 minutes’ walk from the lodges. Beyond that, it’s up to you… Active types will want to be out on the coastal path, taking the 45-minute walk to see the sea stacks at Duncansby Head, or tackling the trickier task of navigating around the cliffs of Dunnet Head (25 minutes’ drive). Pack binoculars if you’re heading that way, as the RSPB reserve at Dunnet Head is an excellent place to spot puffins, guillemots and other sea birds. Two castles, two completely different experiences – the Queen Mum’s old pad Castle of Mey (10 minutes) has stunning gardens and lots of personal bits on display inside, while medieval Castle Sinclair Girnigoe (half an hour) is now a clifftop ruin where it’s often possible to spot seals between the rocks below. If gazing at Orkney isn’t enough, take a 40-minute ferry ride from John O’Groats for a day checking out its main sights.
