  • Furnished ecolodges on Loch Katrine, 20 minutes from Callander
  • Go Ape Aberfoyle 15 minutes’ drive; Stirling 45 minutes
  • Kitchenette; decked area with views of the lake; discounted cruises
Whether you’re after waterfront strolls or challenging hikes (for you and your canine companion) along forested mountain trails, a holiday in the Trossachs ought to deliver aplenty. A top place to stay to make the most of all the area has to offer is Loch Katrine Eco Lodges, a family-friendly site on the easternmost shore of Loch Katrine, overlooked by Ben A’an mountain. The cosy ecolodges come with real beds, a toilet and sink (a shower block is nearby) and a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, toaster and, of course, a kettle for a nice morning (or afternoon) brew. Other comforts include a TV, but why would you be watching telly when you can sit on your private decked area – maybe with a light lunch on the picnic table – taking in unforgettable views of the lake? When you want to progress from watching the lake to sailing on it, it’s good to know that staying here entitles you to a 10% discount on scheduled cruises, so book yourself on the Steamship Sir Walter Scott (which has been plying these waters since 1900) or one of the other boats. Cruises run daily and throughout the year, and it’s less than a five-minute walk to the departure point (Trossachs Pier). If you want to stay on dry land and explore the surrounding woodland on two wheels, a 10% off cycle hire ensures that you don’t feel left out of the money-off offers. For shops, restaurants and bars, Aberfoyle is a 15-minute drive from the site, or you can head to Callander (20 minutes).

Local attractions

You’ve explored the forest on foot, now it’s time to see it from above. At Go Ape Aberfoyle (15 minutes’ drive), ziplines and high-rope courses put you high above the tree canopy, so you can take in remarkable sights of Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, its lakes and moorland. Stirling (45 minutes), on the River Forth, is dominated by Stirling Castle, a largely 16th-century structure sitting atop a craggy plateau. Staff in Renaissance garb move through the elegant interiors, recreating the court of King James V. Near the university campus, the National Wallace Monument has far-reaching views of the city and beyond. Highlights in Glasgow (60 minutes) include the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, with collections ranging from natural history to the decorative arts, including furniture pieces by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. After visiting the Botanic Gardens, head to the National Piping Centre to learn about Scotland’s famed bagpipes.
