  • A five-minute drive from Loch Tay and 20 minutes from Loch Earn
  • Well-equipped kitchens and barbecues provided; pub two miles away
Fresh air, Highland views and greenery all around – you've got to hand it to the folks at Killin Highland Lodges, this is a pretty smashing spot. Rural ramblers heading here will likely appreciate the park's easy access to nearby lochs and hillsides, while the plush lodge interiors and lovingly landscaped grounds are bound to be a draw for pretty much anyone looking for cosy Scottish breaks.  This site is located about two miles (that's five minutes' drive, thanks to the speedy A827) from the centre of Killin, home to a range of shops, pubs and the white waters of the Falls of Dochart. Visiting golf fans may also be tempted to indulge in a round or two at Killin Golf Club (feel free to hire equipment when paying your green fees if you're a newbie or don't fancy lugging your kit around). In terms of food prep, all the park's accommodation comes with a well-appointed kitchen, while those looking to cook outdoors can take advantage of the barbecue area. Fancy a night off washing-up duty? Both pub food and fine dining options are available in Killin. And now for a fact that's sure to get tails wagging: guests travelling with pets are welcome here.

Rowan 1 bedroom lodge

Liked: Great self catering facilities. More than we expected. Lovely view from the terrace. Great tv channel options. Just a couple of miles from Killin itself which has a great friendly pub at the Falls of Dochart.

Disliked: We were told once we got there that the electricity meter wasn't working and so there was a flat rate of £4.50 per night's stay to pay at the start of the stay (despite the accommodation advert saying it would roughly cost around £2 per night). I understand the business doesn't want to be out of pocket, but we barely used any electricity and so feel this was a little excessive and sadly, it has still left a bit of a bad taste in our mouths over a week on. Also, the material used for the lodges means you can hear everything from those next door to you. Every word spoken and every blow of a nose. We also went up the back of the property following the "dog walk" signs as were told you could see the loch from up there. The directional signs stopped at a junction and so we had to decide whether to go left or right. We chose the wrong direction and were walking for around a further 30 minutes with no loch in sight and we came to heavy brush so had to turn back.

Local attractions

Killin Highland Lodges is located a few yards from the boundary of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, so it's a breeze to get out into some splendid scenery. Loch Tay is also less than five minutes' drive away: head to the local sailing club (20 minutes) for nearby aquatic adventure, or tour the equally serene surrounds of Loch Earn (20 minutes) and Loch Voil (30 minutes). Mountaineers and hill walkers are also well served hereabouts, but if you only have time for one hike, make it the Meall nan Tarmachan mountain ridge. The ascent isn't as arduous as it looks from afar, especially if you set off from Ben Lawers visitor centre (20 minutes). That said, you won't want to be caught out in flip flops here: a fair bit of scrambling is in order if you want to walk the full length of the trail. For history buffs and curious kids, the Scottish Crannog Centre (25 minutes) has a life-size mock-up of an Iron Age settlement: head here for guided tours, ancient music demos and all manner of outdoorsy crafts. For a spot of natural history, swing by Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre (40 minutes).
