Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Spacious pitching area for pitching and good to have the car next to you. Pretty relaxed feel. Near the shower / toilet facilities but on one morning, no water to shower in - no notice up or anything asking you to use another block further into the site. We will be back due to it only being an hour from home - we brought our own cooking facilities so prices didn't bother us much.

Disliked: Food / shop prices were over inflated - a burger & chips from the van was £11. Dogs were not kept on a lead, even though you weren't allowed to use the camping field to let your dog do the toilet (another area) it didn't seem like some were overly bothered by letting their dogs off lead.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: We have camped lots of times before. Love it here. The kids did putting, played on the inflatables, in the park and had lots of space to run around and play football. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The pizzas in the Tavern are delicious and the kids loved their milkshakes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (solo)

Liked: The warm welcome, explanation of the facilities and friendly staff. The tent camping pitch was nice and level with good scenery all around and plenty of space.

Disliked: Not exactly a dislike (as an explanation was given) but the lack of hot water and showers at the tent camping pitches, so one needed to walk back into the main camping ground to use any hot water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (solo)

Liked: Fabulous location to explore the wonderful Scottish border region. Plenty of space to pitch your tent, very clean toilet and shower block, wooded walks around the site, golf course( not for me.) The tavern restaurant had an excellent choice of food meaning you don't have to leave the site in the evening. Well stocked shop. Far reaching views. Friendly and helpful staff made for a pleasant week.

Disliked: Shower could have been a few degrees warmer.

Liked: Great pub on site. Good shop and warm welcome. Able to choose pitch site.

Disliked: Disappointed that the showers at the tent feild werent functioning and that hot water to toilet block and washing up sinks were also turned off. Personally we felt that was a health and safety issue esp having no hot water in the toilets to wash hands. We questioned this and were told their weren't enough tents on site to turn it on. There were easily 18 tents. Such a shame as we camped last year and thought it was great. This year we were let down. We've paid the pitch fees so expect the facilities advertised to be open.

Local attractions

Think of Scotland and you likely think of (among other things) castles, whiskey and golf. The latter is nicely provided on site, but there can never be too much of a good thing... Perfect that swing on a handful of courses within easy reach, including one in the village of St Boswells, 10 minutes’ drive from the site. This part of the country should also satisfy even the most ardent castle fans too (as long as they remember to check opening dates): the 16th-century Ferniehirst is 15 minutes away; Scotland’s largest inhabited Castle, Floors, is 25 minutes from base; and the former love nest of Mary Queen of Scots and the fourth Earl of Bothwell, Hermitage Castle, is reachable in less than an hour. Those keen to stay in the past should have a poke around the ruins of Melrose and Jedburgh abbeys, both within 20 minutes, or stick to statelier affairs at Abbotsford and Monteviot within the same radius. Active types might prefer to opt for wanders around Harestanes (10 minutes) or swing through the trees at Go Ape Peebles and pedal down precipitous slopes at the 7stanes trails at Glentress, both 50 minutes away. Gin quaffers will want to pour themselves over to the Born in the Borders visitor centre 25 minutes from base but, when it comes to the uisge beatha (that’s the water of life, or whiskey for all the non-Gaelic speakers), a trip to Edinburgh comes highly recommended for tours of the whiskey museum (plus more museums, castles and shops, of course).
