Ready to embrace the luxury side of glamping? Here’s a place where the outdoor accommodation is of the highest quality… and with a rather well-known address too. Atholl Estates Shepherd's Huts are located in rural Perthshire, within the 145,000-acre country estate that also houses none other than Blair Castle. Staying on this smart estate gives guests easy access to all sorts of outdoor activities, including more than 40 miles of waymarked walking trails, pony picnics, deer stalking and European beaver tours. It’s also possible to book a spot for some of the most scenic fishing in Scotland, around the estate’s riverbanks (on the Tilt, Tummel and Garry) or its hill lochs. Beyond all of that, there’s also the option of travelling into Pitlochry (15 minutes’ drive), exploring the nearby wildlife haven of Tulliemet Moor or heading up into the Cairngorms National Park. Don’t forget to factor in some time spent on site though, as you’re bound to want to hang out in your lovely hut for quite some time. They’ve been parked 20 metres apart in a meadow with stunning views out across Strathtay and beyond – views that can be admired from a comfy hammock or while relaxing by the firepit in an outdoor armchair with sheepswool rugs. Time inside is quite tempting too – these huts have a serious luxury vibe with gorgeous decor (think hand-stitched quilts and block-printed linens), a comfy kingsize bed and a fully fitted kitchen. With a woodburning stove, underfloor heating and hot shower provided too, you should be able to keep warm and cosy at all times while gazing out of the window at those lovely views.

Local attractions

After you’ve explored your own estate surroundings, head over to adjacent Tulliemet Moor, which is part of the Forest of Clunie SSSI and home to such wildlife as osprey, lapwings, curlews, deer, otters and beavers. For more potential wild encounters, visit the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes reserve (20 minutes’ drive) to see if you can spot the breeding pair of ospreys. If you’d rather just roam, Loch Ordie, a similar distance away, is a popular place for walks and bike rides. Take a break from all the outdoor time with a trip to Pitlochry (15 minutes) to catch a show at the theatre or learn a bit about the local tipple on a tour of Blair Athol Distillery. If you fancy a stroll round a bigger city, it’s about a half-hour drive to Perth or an hour to Dundee for the likes of the V&A Dundee and Verdant Works textile museum.
