  • Family-friendly glamping site for the Edinburgh Festival
  • Peaceful location five miles from city centre with easy bus travel
  • Bell tent accommodation with mattresses and all bedding provided
Keen to visit the Edinburgh Festival, but also a bit concerned that staying in the busy city centre might be a bit much? Here’s an excellent solution for you: Festival Glamping at The Drum, a family-owned luxury glamping site in Gilmerton, about five miles from the city centre. As the name suggests, this site opens up specifically to provide accommodation for Edinburgh Festival season. From its handy location in the south of the city it’s easy to hop on a bus and head into the centre whenever you’re ready to be entertained with all the comedy, theatre shows, music and the like – but you’ll also be able to relax in a more peaceful setting when you’re in need of some downtime. And what a peaceful setting it is – in the grounds of the gorgeous 18th-century Drum Estate, which has been the location for numerous films and TV shows and is home to all sorts of good things including a regenerative farm, wildlife areas and a riding school for the disabled. The accommodation is suitably smart too: you’ll be staying in a lovely bell tent that sleeps up to four people, with comfy mattresses, cosy throws and all bedding, duvets and pillows provided. There are lanterns to provide a bit of soft light, and you’ll be able to cook your meals on the barbecues or relax and keep warm beside the firepits. Shared facilities include toilets, showers and wifi, along with a play area where the kids can let off a bit of steam. A handy small supermarket is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the estate entrance.

Local attractions

The huge variety of events at the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival will probably fill much of your schedule here, but it may well be that you’ll want to have a change of scenery occasionally during your visit. That may be with a visit to some of Edinburgh’s main attractions – the National Museum of Scotland, Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur’s Seat, perhaps – or it might be something completely different in the local area. Staying in the south of the city, you’ll be close to walking and bike trails nearby and also other outdoor activities including golf at Kings Acre Golf Course and family fun at Fort Douglas Adventure Park (both 10 minutes’ drive). Heading a little further out, you could go for a good long stroll in the Pentland Hills Regional Park (15 minutes) or spend some time on the sandy beach in North Berwick (35 minutes). If you’re on a grownup break, perhaps a little tour and tasting at Glenkinchie Distillery (20 minutes) too?
