West Tor: Views over the Southern Uplands in the distance

General

  • Nearly-wild camping field in a rural Lanarkshire location
  • A 40-minute drive from Irvine and Glasgow city centre
  • Part of a working smallholding; a short walk from a fishery

Looking for almost-wild camping in Lanarkshire? This rural site is part of a working smallholding on the edge of the small village of Drumclog, a convenient location close to the A71. There's plenty of grass and open skies at West Tor, and lots of room for guests to pick their own plot, while a band of woodland provides shelter from the wind and privacy for overnight guests.

This site is an easy 40-minute drive from central Glasgow, making a great base for quick escapes to the country or longer stints in the rural Scottish Lowlands. Some of the site owners' organic dairy calves can often be seen grazing in a neighbouring field, while at other times of year there's plenty of nature about to keep you entertained.

West Tor has simple facilities like a composting toilet and tap stand on site, meaning that this is a place best suited to self-sustaining travellers who enjoy the chance to build a campfire or cook their own dinner over a barbecue.

Away from base, anglers will find entertainment at the local fishery (a short walk from site), while other outdoor activities like Drumclog Offroad Centre (five minutes' drive) and hiking trails are also within easy reach.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

If you read the description from the owner you wont be disappointed . It really is semi wild camping. Theres plenty of flat bits if you go thru the field and apart from the compost toilet and stand pipe you've got to fend and cook for yourself. Bliss! If your thinking of going wild camping, head over here 1st for a good practice few days. Theres also the safety of knowing that just at the back of the line if trees, civilisation exists too.
Toilet was clean, field was spotless from litter and you can have a fire so take logs. The farmer popped by to feed the cattle and was very chatty. Top place for its 1st year.

We had the field to ourselves, had a standpipe for water and a composting toilet. The calves in the next field were friendky and inquisitive and it was a nice, quiet location with lovely countryside around.

Great that there was a toilet calfs in the field beside, fresh air and glorious weather, conditions in general great! Also close to amenities in Strathven. All in all a great weekend stay.

We went a short walk and passed buzzards and farm animals and a friendly collie dog, it was a nice trip away from the manic existance of the big smoke.

We went to test our new tent and West Tor was relatively close to home. Lovely campsite which feels like wild camping but with some rural houses (not within view) around to make you feel safe. It feels like a farmers field and some calfs in the next field came to chat to us which was lovely. There is a self composting toilet in a tent tucked away at a section of the field which was immaculate and felt that the owners had prepared for us coming. Plenty of toilet paper etc. Dogs and campfires allowed and lovely and peaceful but close to all the amenities of pretty Strathaven. Will be back!

Long grass, uneven pitches, lots of flies, compost toilet14/07/2021

The campsite was okay and we made friends with the cows in the field next door. The compost toilet was great.

    Disliked:

The field was very unkept, the grass was very long and we struggled to find an area flat enough to pitch a tent. I feel like the site was very expensive for what was there. There were a lot of flies, and the site wasn't as remote as others we had been to. If this had been wild camping
There would have been no issues. But the price we paid for what we had was too much.

From the manager...

Thank you for the feedback.
I accept the grass on the field is longer than ideal and will address this over the next few days.
As regards to price / value for money I took advice from pitchup on this before posting the site and I was told I was right for what was on offer (basics of standing tap & the composting toilet and dealing with the waste from this) and our location. However as I'm new to providing any type of camping facilities I will take on board your opinion when we make future plans for pricing and or improving facilities.
The flies are harder to manage as very weather dependent 🤷‍♂️
Thanks for your custom.
