If you’re looking for a peaceful, small-scale Scottish bolthole, you'll certainly want to take a peek at Pentland View Campsite, a micro-site 20 minutes’ drive from Lanark. Accommodation at this peaceful spot in the Lanarkshire countryside is in cosy wooden pods with spectacular views towards the Pentland Hills. Each unit has been thoughtfully designed for comfort and has facilities including a TV, cosy twin beds, a sofa and storage space as well as the basics (microwave and kettle) in a kitchen corner. Heating is provided too, making them suitable for all-season escapes. Clean on-site showers (with guaranteed hot water) and toilets are just a short stroll away, and the entire site has been designed for a quiet, relaxing experience – in short, they’re just the job for couples, solo adventurers or indeed anyone needing a break from the everyday. The pods are located 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Forth, where you can source all the essentials you need for your stay in a clutch of convenience stores; there’s also a pub and a couple of takeaways for those who prefer to swerve the cooking.

Local attractions

Add a cultural element to your Lanarkshire break with a visit to the Wilsontown Ironworks (five minutes’ drive), an important relic of the Industrial Revolution in an area once covered with furnaces and mines. There’s more industrial heritage at New Lanark (25 minutes), where an 18th-century cotton mill and workers’ cottages have been painstakingly restored; you can also take scenic walks along the River Clyde here. There are more bracing strolls to be had in the Pentland Hills Regional Park (35 minutes), while the Falls of Clyde (25 minutes) offer up hikes through woodland to impressive waterfalls – keep your eye out for elusive otters in the water as you go. Outdoor adventurers can also climb Culter Fell (40 minutes) or Tinto Hill (half an hour) for stunning views across South Lanarkshire’s woodland glens. Combine your exercise with something out of the ordinary: clamber up Leven Seat (10 minutes) to the Leven Seat Klostoph Buddha, a gold-painted effigy of Buddha atop the trig point. Alternatively, take the weight off your feet with a tasting session at The Wee Farm Distillery and Steak & Still Farm Shop (10 minutes), which sells heritage gins made on site and a fine array of Scottish produce from Arran cheeses to Aberdeen Angus steaks.
