  • Nearly wild camping on a peaceful, 250-acre Lanarkshire farm
  • New Lanark 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow 45 minutes; Edinburgh an hour
  • Woodland pitches surrounded by fields and woodland; shared firepits
Not quite ready for full-on wild camping but keen on an adventure under canvas? One with spectacular views down the Clyde Valley, with 250 acres of woodland and fields to wander? Haste ye to Cleghorn Farm, 10 minutes’ drive northeast of the market town of Lanark, where you can have a go at “nearly wild” camping on tree-shaded grass pitches with facilities including eco-friendly humanure toilets and water for washing or cooking (please bring bottled water for drinking). There is a path up to the pitches, which can be accessed by quad bike if you’re bringing in lots of gear. Nearby are a couple of communal firepits for rustling up alfresco meals, with wood and kindling available from Cleghorn Mains farmhouse. Otherwise, you’re pretty much on your own. The fields around the site are grazed and cultivated, but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last Ice Age. You can stroll paths through the trees, or take a walk with spectacular views along Cleghorn Glen, keeping an eye out for badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the pine and beech trees. You’re very welcome to bring any family dogs to join in your holiday, but please respect the local wildlife and livestock by keeping them under control at all times. And as this is a peaceful rural hideaway, the owners ask that noise is kept to a minimum between 10pm and 7am.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (solo)

Liked: The location of this camp site was almost perfect. very basic. just a toilet. woodland area quite for the most part. just far enough of the beaten path. friendly owners very helpful.

Disliked: no so much dislikes and point of reference. road in is a farm track gravel ok for cars not so much for motorbikes but manageable. this site is more geared up for the solo back packer than the family or biker (no parking near your pitch )camper as there is a little rustic walk to the actual camp area. one the plus they do provide wheel barrows. pack light if you want to stop here.

From the manager: Hi Mark, Thanks for your review and kind words about the site. We are trying to keep it deliberately "nearly wild" partly to avoid any issues with farm traffic but also to limit damage to the road which, as you will have noticed, really doesn't like lots of rain! Thanks again and hope you enjoyed your onward journey.

Pondwood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (six person)

Liked: Not crowded Family friendly Being cozy and relaxing

Disliked: Toilet services and manual water pump can be improved

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review, Omid. I'm glad that you all had a relaxing time. Our toilet facilities are very basic as we are trying to have a minimal impact on the land. We appreciate your feedback and are always trying to improve what we offer. The weekend you were here was our busiest yet and it was interesting to see what the site could cope with!

Local attractions

The owners recommend taking long walks around the farm, or along the Mouse Water, which bounds the southern edge of the property and has refreshing pools for wild swimming, shallows for splashing around in and canoe hire for paddling downriver. Pretty Cleghorn Glen is also accessible right from the pitches. When exploring a little further afield, first stop might be New Lanark (10 minutes’ drive), the UNESCO-listed heritage village sitting on the Clyde and built for cotton spinners in the 18th century. Today its restored mills and worker housing are open for immersive time-travel tours, weaver demonstrations and shopping. It’s also the gateway to riverside strolls down to the dramatic Falls of Clyde cascades. For days out in the big city, Edinburgh (an hour and 10 minutes) has big-hitting attractions like the hilltop castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Dynamic Earth science centre and planetarium, as well as a lively dining and nightlife scene. Glasgow (45 minutes) pulls in the crowds with famed art galleries including the Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and if you’re there at the weekend, Barras Market is a popular spot for bargain hunters.
