Macbeth's Hillock: Small Glamping Site

General

  • Luxury Highland site with a legend attached
  • Half an hour from sea fishing, dolphin spotting and Loch Ness cruises
  • Many famed whisky distilleries within an hour's drive

Here’s a magical spot. Or maybe it’s a mythical one…. Tis said that Macbeth’s Hillock, half an hour’s drive from Inverness, is where the future King of Scotland met with the three witches and first learned his dreadful destiny.

Cast thoughts of blasted heaths and witches’ brews from your mind, though, for this is a flower-filled site with country views, comfortable accommodation in pods with ensuite bathrooms, and friendly flocks of chickens and sheep next door.

If you do want to mutter prophecies over a cauldron, you’re quite welcome to do so, and there are firepits on every outdoor terrace for the cooking up of potions or more practical stuff like sausages. (And if you don’t know a good spell for conjuring up groceries, you can visit the shops in Nairn, 10 minutes away, or dine out at its restaurants and takeaways.)

While the witches might not have existed, Macbeth certainly did... and the coastline of the Moray Firth is dotted with reminders of Scotland’s proud and sometimes turbulent history. A couple of minutes’ drive away, the rose-hued and multi-turreted Brodie Castle has been home to the local clan chiefs since the 12th century, and it’s a 15-minute trip to the seat of the real thanes of Cawdor.

Everything! We really enjoyed our stay, check in was easy, the pod was immaculately clean, well set out with everything we needed and the owners made sure they were available if we needed them ( the owner even helped us light our bbq as we were getting absolutely nowhere with it ). The area the pods was in felt safe and secure and our son was able to go out and play safely where we could see him. The honesty shop was amazing and really well stocked. We would definitely return and will be recommending to friends and family. Lovely location and lots to do and see nearby.

    Disliked:

The only thing we weren’t sure about what was the proper etiquette was to walk back to the car, pod 5 was great as it was the last pod and no one had to walk by it but the path is quite close to the toilet windows of the pod and the wee window really needs to be open when your in the shower or the whole pod ends up like a steam room, so your left feeling a bit exposed in case anyone is walking by. But also appreciate not much can be done about this now and it wouldn’t stop me from returning as everything else was absolutely perfect.

By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. A Macbeth quote but one not worthy of Macbeth Hillock pod glamping. Nothing wicked about it at all.
The pod, or hobbit hut as the kids called it was our stay. 2 adults. 2 kids. 2 dogs.
It was excellent. All mod cons in a small space; kettle, toaster, hot shower, toilet, fridge, comfy beds etc. Space outside was ideal to throw a frisbee, play football, or if there are small children, play in sand pit. The fire pit was brilliant. Keeps the older kids entertained- making fire. But bring marshmallows with you. If you forget, not to worry. The on site “shop” sells them along with skewers and other things you may have forgotten. The basic “shop” is open 24/7.
The pods have plenty of utensils and pots available, chairs and even washing up liquid and sponge. What more is needed. Ah yes. Scottish weather. But we were lucky with sunshine all day long.
Plenty of activities around too- forest walks, beach walks, loch walks- Loch Ness is only 40mins away, and Brodie castle is right next door. It’s only a 40 min slow walk from pod to castle. The castle car park has a fast EV charging point, so extremely handy, but there are also rapid chargers and plenty of fast chargers in Nairn and Forres. Plenty of EV charging available near by.
Owners were very friendly and welcoming. And if you ask what the sheep names are, you will have a smile on your face as sheep names are hilarious. But not as funny as their bleatings…grraaaace….baaaaeeee.
A lovely place. Highly recommended. But our next visit will not include 2 kids and 2 dogs. Just 2 adults.
    Thank you Macbeth Hillock Glamping.

The ensuite pod with its small kitchen is very nice. I like the peaceful and very clean environment. The place is not too remote. Brodie Castle and Brodie Country Fair are just 5 minutes drive. A strawberry farm is just around the corner. McDonald's Restaurant and Sainsbury are only10-mins away. The beautiful Nairn Beach is less than 15 mins away.

Local attractions

Half an hour away, a more recent 19th-century stronghold sits on top of Inverness; like the former army base of Fort George and the Highlanders’ Museum, it’s worth a wander, especially when finished off with boat cruises down Loch Ness, looking out for you-know-who.

If you’re mad keen on finding Nessie, or just interested in the life of the loch, make sure you pay a trip to the visitor centre at Drumnadrochit, an hour away. A number of walking and biking paths depart from there around the lake shores and the ruins of Castle Urquhart.

Sea fishing and dolphin spotting trips depart from Inverness and you can learn more about the local cetacean residents on dry land at the Scottish Dolphin Centre (50 minutes).

Heading inland and upwards, it’s an hour and 15 minutes to CairnGorm Mountain, for the UK’s highest funicular railway rides, hikes through the national park wilderness and visits to the antlered residents of the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre.

In need of refreshment? Scotch distilleries are thick on the ground in these parts for tours, tastings and purchasing: it’s a 45-minute trip to sample the spirits of Knockando, while the houses of Glenlivet and Tomintoul are both an hour away.

Must see

  • Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (19.6 miles)
  • Culloden Visitor Centre (19.6 miles)
  • James Pringle Weavers of Inverness (19.6 miles)
