  • Well-maintained holiday park five minutes' drive from Drummore
  • A 40-minute drive from Cairnryan and ferries to Belfast
  • Sea views from the holiday homes; coast path running through the site
Sea views from your deck, sea views from your lounge, sea views from the coastal path that runs through the site…yup, it’s safe to say that Maryport Holiday Park is a bit of a seafront stunner. Travel south for four miles from here and you’re in danger of dropping over the edge: this Dumfries & Galloway site is almost at Scotland’s most southerly point, marked by the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (which you can see from the site, with the Isle of Man lurking beyond if the weather’s clear enough). Life is mighty peaceful out on this peninsula – it’s a fine place for coastal rambles, sea fishing, birdwatching or just putting your feet up and staring at the sea (ideally while stoking a barbecue and/or holding a glass of vino). A play area has been set up for kids who need a bit more activity to keep them happy while you kick back. To source essentials for keeping the party fed and watered, it’s a five-minute drive or half-hour amble to the nearest village of Drummore, where there’s a well-stocked shop, a café and a couple of pubs where those on foot can refresh with a pint ahead of the return leg. Beyond that is Cairnryan, 40 minutes' drive away and the place to go for bigger shopping expeditions, a leisure centre and ferries to Belfast.

Local attractions

Now that you’ve come this far down the peninsula, it’s a given that you’ll want to continue on all the way to the end… and well you should, for the outlook from the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse is pretty spectacular, especially for those folk who climb up to the top for an elevated view. Back down at ground level is an RSPB reserve that’s a popular hangout for all sorts of seabirds: drive down to this pretty part of the world in about 15 minutes if you like, but it’s highly recommended that you amble along the coast path if you can (it’s about an hour and a half’s hike). More gorgeous views – this time with much vegetation to admire? Aim for Logan Botanic Garden (15 minutes’ drive), Ardwell Gardens (15 minutes) and Glenwhan Gardens (half an hour), or mix in fine gardens and stately pads with outings to Castle Kennedy or Glenluce Abbey (each half an hour away). Should all this seaside scenery have you hankering after a taste of the local seafood, schedule a stop in Portpatrick (half an hour), touted by the folk on site as home to the area’s best fish restaurant.
