  • Scottish widlife haven in scenic surrounds
  • Six miles from Stranraer
  • Take the nearby ferry for a day trip to Belfast
A stunningly scenic break in Scotland – with a quick day-trip jaunt over to Belfast and the Northern Ireland countryside for a day trip sounds just tickety-boo to us. This is the flavour of North Rhinns Camping, just six miles from Stanraer and close to Cairnryan to sail straight across to Belfast – it's only a couple of miles from the rocky coast and secluded beaches facing Ireland's north-east side. If you're sticking around on the Scottish side, a wealth of wildlife and nature is around to see – deer and hares regularly roam through the site field, and small and migrating birds are always around as well as buzzards circling overhead. The site surrounds are made up of wild scrubs of heather, whin bushes, willow trees and neighbouring grassland grazed by cattle and sheep. A belt of trees and bushes in the North Rhinns camping field gives most pitches shelter and privacy; all pitches are in separate areas between trees and bushes. The amenities building is modern and has free hot electric showers, wheelchair access, and a wetfloor shower with a shower stool and space for assistance. A good village shop and a bus service to Stranraer and Kirkcolm are at the nearby village of Leswalt.

What customers say

This adult-only campsite offers a peaceful, secluded retreat nestled in woodland. Pitches are well-spaced with privacy and often include thoughtful extras like gazebos or fire pits. Facilities, including a single spacious shower, toilets, and a communal kitchen area with kettle and fridge, are consistently described as clean and well-maintained. Hosts are frequently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness, providing local information. While some found the location isolated with limited nearby amenities and a lack of Wi-Fi/phone signal, most visitors highly recommend the site for its quiet atmosphere and personal touches, with many planning return visits.

#3 electric optional hardstanding and grass campervan pitch (medium)

Liked We liked the campsite a lot, it was so peaceful, clean, quiet, well maintained and you got a good view of the stars as there wasn’t light pollution.

Disliked The manners of the owner Ray has unfortunately made us not want to come back or recommend this site to anyone.

We was late due to traffic, when we stopped for lunch I tried to contact via WhatsApp but because I had 3G it didn’t send, so I tried a text informing him that it looks to be more like 7pm we would arrive and that said it had failed to I tried again and it went through. A text response was ‘Better late than never I suppose’ .. I thought nothing of this and thought I have tried my best to get in contact with them incase they had plans or didn’t live close to the site etc.

Anyways.. We arrived at the campsite and the I saw a sign to ring the bell. Upon ringing the bell I didn’t hear it sound (I thought it might be on silent as it’s late) but I also noticed that it didn’t light up as it looked like it should have.. Thinking that it didn’t go through I thought I would call as we were blocking the entrance to the site as a car left just before we came in… Well that was a BIG MISTAKE! Don’t do that, otherwise you will unleash the beast!

Ray came out and noticed I had my phone in my hand and towered over me and said “ARE YOU CALLING ME AFTER YOU JUST RANG THE BELL??!!” … Without letting me explain about being unsure the bell was working and that I was blocking the entrance he continued to say “YOU ARE SO RUDE AND IMPATIENT, YOU ARRIVE LATE AND THEN YOU DO THAT AND YOU CANT WAIT! I LIVE RIGHT THERE (pointing behind at the house like we was meant to know), GIVE ME CHANCE, YOU ARE JUST SO RUDE! YOUR ON PLOT 3 GO.” And then he stormed back to his house I’m guessing.

The interaction felt very threatening, quite scary to be honest. We would have turned round, left and let him keep the money if it wasn’t so late and traveled for 7h instead of 4.5h.

After this another camper came to check if we were ok.

The next day he was interacting with new arrivals and was friendly, he was showing them around and giving them lots of information.

He continued to ignore us for the whole stay, I said good afternoon to the other owner and she ignored me.

#7 electric optional grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Everything.
Pitch had picnic table and fire pit and use of a BBQ and pizza oven. Very quiet location (no children helps with that!)
Spotlessly clean site and toilet block.
Not many sites provide washing up facilities that include washing up liquid and tea towels.
Brilliant week thanks.

Disliked Nothing.

#10 non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked This was an intimate little site with individual plots. I was on plot 10 which was surrounded on 3 sides by hedges with a view across the fields. Facilities were clean and looked after with 2 toilets, 1 shower and a kitchen area with sinks and a fridge.

Disliked The wind - but I did go in a storm! 😆

#8 electric optional grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Toilet block with large shower. Although only one shower, it was always free when we wanted it & plenty of room to sort yourself out in there!
Communal area with kettle, sink & plug-sockets (invaluable for charging phones & for plugging in my Dyson hairdryer!)
Private & secluded pitches. Gazebo was a useful touch.

Disliked Although pitch was large, it was difficult to find uneven ground for the tent.
Whilst facilities for log-burning is a nice touch, not so nice when you are down wind of the campers across from you, who are burning away into the wee hours…

#4 electric optional hardstanding campervan pitch (small)

Liked Ray was extremely helpful in organizing a pitch for our friends next to our campervan. The site is so quiet and nestled right into the woods - we had a really lovely time. Everything was organized and clean and we’ve already recommended the site to our friends!

#1 electric optional grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Lovely peaceful site. Good size pitches. Secluded. Small but clean shower. Loved the fire pit.

Disliked NOT an adult only site as advertised. As owner said it was up to her at her discretion. Her whole attitudec hanged after I I questioned her about children in site.

#6 electric optional grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked One of the best small campsites we've had the pleasure to visit. Lovely, quiet individual pitches with screening trees & bushes to give just enough privacy from your neighbours. Our tent pitch had a really useful wooden shelter with large picnic table & clothes line. We borrowed (and almost ruined) the pizza oven. Our hosts were friendly, chatty & couldn't have been more helpful if thy'd been called Mr & Mrs Helpful.

#2 electric optional hardstanding and grass campervan pitch (large)

Liked I loved the quirkiness of this site, each pitch is different and has added extras included in your pitch such as wooden kitchen shed or gazebo. I would describe each pitch which has its own garden, making your pitch spacier. I think they’re are only 12 pitches, most of the camping pitches are ‘no’ car, so a wheel barrow is supplied … The loo shed facilities include loos, a shower, kettles, fridges and washing up facilities. There’s also a gazebo for bicyclists and motorcyclists to store their gear in.
The hosts were so friendly
The only thing it doesn’t have is wet waste disposal for campervans/homes.
Probably the best camping site in the world! This is how I would do camping!
The site is off a quiet road into a gate
Hint: when you book, there’s a number on the description, this is your pitch number.

Local attractions

This is wildlife watching land: as well as the birds and animals directly around North Rhinns Camping, the Rhins of Stranraer can have nature watchers spotting seals, spying birds of prey like peregrine falcons, and training binoculars on the steep sheer cliffs to see the likes of guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, gulls, cormorants and shags. Many walks and bike rides are also around the area, both on the waymarked trails of the Rhins and on the quiet roads all around. Several fishing lochs are about too: try Soulseat Loch and Knockquassen Reservoir, sea fishing from the coast, or the River Cree just outside the Rhins. Guests could also visit the Gardens of Galloway, trek around the area's ruined castles and amble around the local harbour villages like Luce Bay, Portpatrick and Sandhead. Stranraer six miles away is home of Stranraer Museum, the medieval townhouse Castle of St. John and North West Castle, the first hotel in the world with a curling ice rink (we hear the Scots are pretty cool at curling). If you're making the day return trip from Cairnryan to Belfast, take the 96 Metro bus or a ten-minute taxi journey to Belfast city centre from the ferry port for a tour of the City Hall, lunch in one of the old city pubs (try White's Tavern or the Mourne Seafood Bar) and an open bus tour of Belfast's historical sites in the afternoon.
