  • Family-run campsite in the grounds of a hotel; food available
  • Dumfries or Carlisle 25 minutes' drive; Glasgow an hour and 10 minutes
  • Pet-friendly bar; cask ales available all year round
Tasty bites to eat, beers and peaceful mornings fishing might be a preview of your stay at Ecclefechan Hotel… this site is on the grounds of a family-run hotel in the small village of Ecclefechan, where there’s the river Annan for fishing five minutes’ drive away or castles and Glasgow further out. The hotel, a listed building, holds a prominent standing in the village and its history. The most famous guest to have stayed here was Rabbie Burns (just a wee bit before the current landlords' time…). There is food and drink available in the hotel, with breakfast available as required. Cask ales are on offer here year round, and pets are allowed to join you for a laidback few hours in the bar area. Located close to the national motorway network, this site has an uncrowded grass area and access to the hotel's toilet facilities (no showers). Parking by the pitch is not possible, but there's space available in the hotel car park adjacent to the grassy area. Heading to the Scottish interior or south to England is equally easy from here, as the site is a 25-minute drive from either Carlisle or Dumfries.

Local attractions

Grab your map and pencil out your route… your first point of interest is only within walking distance and it’s Thomas Carlyle’s birthplace (an influential writer, if you didn’t know, so his writing desk and bookshelf are some points of interest inside). Shopping or eating out is particularly splendid in Gretna Green (10 minutes), which is mostly known as the marriage capital of the UK, or there are more cities and towns where you’ll be well-set for a good shopping spree, sightseeing or trying out the local delicacies, from Dumfries (25 minutes) to Carlisle (25 minutes) with its castle, Roman bathhouse and stretch of Hadrian’s Wall. Of course, Glasgow (an hour and 10 minutes) is another good spot to get in some more sightseeing, as is New Lanark (an hour), an 18th-century mill village that’s been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As for places that are closer by, Caerlaverock Castle (half an hour) is one of those cool-looking castles you might find it hard to keep your eyes away from, while any keen golfers will find a course at the Lockerbie Golf Club (10 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice, fairly flat grass pitch, wonderful hosts, great Scottish breakfast and lovely pub food.

Disliked: The exceptionally bright outdoor light which lit up our tent for most of the night. Next time we stay will will pitch our tent behind the wall of the outbuilding!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly landlord and cook. Able to get really good meals virtually on site at good prices. Choice of camping in open or in orchard, both with soft grass. Privately hedged although in the middle of the quiet village. Immaculate toilets in hotel accessed from the campsite. Covered exterior seating area with electric socket. Washbasins in the toilets but lack of a shower was the one down point. Handy for the M74 and country routes.
