Ecclefechan Hotel: View of the hotel from the street

General

  • Family-run campsite in the grounds of a hotel; food available
  • Dumfries or Carlisle 25 minutes' drive; Glasgow an hour and 10 minutes
  • Pet-friendly bar; cask ales available all year round

Tasty bites to eat, beers and peaceful mornings fishing might be a preview of your stay at Ecclefechan Hotel… this site is on the grounds of a family-run hotel in the small village of Ecclefechan, where there’s the river Annan for fishing five minutes’ drive away or castles and Glasgow further out.

The hotel, a listed building, holds a prominent standing in the village and its history. The most famous guest to have stayed here was Rabbie Burns (just a wee bit before the current landlords' time…).

There is food and drink available in the hotel, with breakfast available as required. Cask ales are on offer here year round, and pets are allowed to join you for a laidback few hours in the bar area.

Located close to the national motorway network, this site has an uncrowded grass area and access to the hotel's toilet facilities (no showers). Parking by the pitch is not possible, but there's space available in the hotel car park adjacent to the grassy area.

Heading to the Scottish interior or south to England is equally easy from here, as the site is a 25-minute drive from either Carlisle or Dumfries.

Nice cosy pub, quiet area, liked how much space we had and the toilets and bar were very clean, lovely staff very welcoming. We didn’t eat here as we was adventuring but menu was reasonable priced and looked enticing.

    Disliked:

We didn’t realise there wasn’t much to do around the area, so we did have to drive out a lot so we was of course quite bored.

Had a really pleasant couple of nights in Ecclefechan. The site is ideally situated within a couple of minutes walk of two shops, and the food at the pub itself is extremely reasonable, less than a tenner for a main. Steve the landlord was incredibly welcoming and reiterated just to shout if there was anything I needed.
The pitch is basic and you need to read the description, but for a couple of nights it was perfect for me to explore Dumfries, Carlisle and the Solway Coast. Would happily stay again, it's a beautiful part of the world and a really nice little site.

The fact that the pitch was so reasonably priced, £12.50 a night, everything was as advertised, and better.

I stayed for 5 nights as a base to travel around Carlisle, and border regions, and bus stops are 2 minutes away for Annan, Gretna and lockerbie.

The lawn at the back of the pub is allocated for maximum of six pitches, which is reasonably spacious and all visitors I encountered just stayed a night.

Food and drinks, including breakfast can be purchased in the pub although I did not make use of this facility.

The pub has password protected wifi with signal extending to camp site, although I did not enquire if this was accessible for campers.

There's a great walk into a forest 10 minutes away that is a three Mile loop with great views and cows along its approach.

And there's a choice of shops just across from the campsite: either Spa or Cost Cutters for the essentials.

Water is available via a garden tap in the carpark, which could do with a sink of one kind or other for washing pots or just gravel so there's no danger of stepping in mud.

And toilets at the rear of the pub (accessible all night for campers) I believe are shared with the pub's customers and are spacious and can be locked on entering as there are no cubicles but are used one person at a time, which makes for a happier morning wash experience, they are of high standard and I experienced very little queuing.

The pub and campsite is dog friendly, which was the determining factor in my staying there.

    Disliked:

Lack of showering facilities, which is as advertised.

I made use of facilities at the swimming pool in Carlisle instead.

Loved this campsite! A real back to basic camping. Lovely little field behind the pub. Perfect pitch even a mini orchard! It's secluded and quiet with 24hr access to lovely clean toilets with hot running water. Outdoor water and electricity supply and a covered seating area. Parking was literally a stones throw from the tent which is nice not having engines revving next to your tent. Dog friendly. There is a lovely walk Brown Moor.
The pub is excellent, great food and really friendly, chatty staff and locals who made us feel really welcome. Our dog was spoilt rotten!! The owners couldn't have been more helpful and made sure we were having a good stay. The food was delicious and was great to find so many vegan options! The chilli and the vegan burger was delicious. Pub has good wi-fi.
We are definitely returning again and will be using this site as a regular stop off and base for both Scotland and the Lakes.

Local attractions

Grab your map and pencil out your route… your first point of interest is only within walking distance and it’s Thomas Carlyle’s birthplace (an influential writer, if you didn’t know, so his writing desk and bookshelf are some points of interest inside).

Shopping or eating out is particularly splendid in Gretna Green (10 minutes), which is mostly known as the marriage capital of the UK, or there are more cities and towns where you’ll be well-set for a good shopping spree, sightseeing or trying out the local delicacies, from Dumfries (25 minutes) to Carlisle (25 minutes) with its castle, Roman bathhouse and stretch of Hadrian’s Wall.

Of course, Glasgow (an hour and 10 minutes) is another good spot to get in some more sightseeing, as is New Lanark (an hour), an 18th-century mill village that’s been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As for places that are closer by, Caerlaverock Castle (half an hour) is one of those cool-looking castles you might find it hard to keep your eyes away from, while any keen golfers will find a course at the Lockerbie Golf Club (10 minutes).

Must see

  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (8.9 miles)
  • Robert Burns Centre (13.9 miles)
  • Carlisle Castle (17.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (27.7 miles)
