  • Luxurious, adults-only glamping with spectacular Solway Firth views
  • A 15-minute drive to Kirkcudbright, and half an hour to Castle Douglas
  • Converted shipping container on a working farm with alpaca trekking
With far-reaching views over to the Cumbrian coast and the Galloway Hills, the Pheasant’s Nest at Senwick Hideaways is a secluded and scenic spot to unwind and forget about life for a few days. Set on a working farm, this adults-only spot is surrounded by grass paddocks, with only sheep and other wildlife for company. Sustainably converted from a former shipping container, the Pheasant’s Nest is an unusual space with a clean, contemporary vibe to its bright interior. With no wifi or television, this is a restful space designed with relaxation in mind. In summer throw open the double bi-fold doors for views out over the Solway Firth, and when night falls, sit on the private patio, spark up the firepit and watch the sun go down behind the Galloway Hills. In cooler months, the electric heating keeps you toasty, so you can curl up with a book or watch the world flit by outside. Your hosts at Upper Senwick Farm offer alpaca trekking and walks around the farm and countryside as well as seasonal lambing experiences. There’s plenty to explore beyond the farm, from beaches and hidden coves to country walks and pretty Galloway towns. Please note, there is a short walk along a gentle incline and through a grass paddock from the car park to the pod, so sensible waterproof shoes are recommended. If arriving after dark, please bring a torch for the three-minute walk as there are no lights in the field. Amenities include double hob, microwave and fridge in the kitchen, a shower in the bathroom, a double bedroom (with linen provided) and a comfy lounge with games and books.

Local attractions

For all arty types, Kirkcudbright (15 minutes’ drive) is known as “The Artists’ Town” and has a fishing harbour, indie shops and art galleries among its pretty painted houses and secret passageways. Associated with the “Glasgow Boys” artists’ colony, the Kirkcudbright Gallery and Broughton House are popular stops. Castle Douglas (half an hour) is “The Food Town”, packed with high-end delis, bakeries and wine merchants. Scotland’s “Book Town” of Wigtown (45 minutes) has a number of book shops and reading cafés, with a week-long book festival held in October, while Dumfries (55 minutes) boasts connections to Scotland’s famous poet Robbie Burns as well as Moat Brae, the birthplace of Peter Pan. To swot up on local history, stroll around the ruins of MacLellan’s Castle and check out the temporary history displays in the Stewartry Museum (both (15 minutes). Moated Caerlaverock Castle (an hour and 10 minutes) offers a great history fix too, with medieval sandstone walls built in triangular shape.
