  • Bespoke cabins with private hot tub on the banks of Loch Ken
  • A five-minute drive from Castle Douglas; half an hour from Dumfries
  • Great scenery and stargazing in an international dark sky park
Immersing yourself in gorgeous natural scenery is a wonderful thing – but it’s even better when that scenery comes with a good dose of comfort and luxury thrown in as well. That’s the heady mix you’ll get when you stay at Galloway Glamping, a family-run Dumfries & Galloway site on the banks of Loch Ken. Accommodation here comes in the form of bespoke cabins with huge windows to provide lots of natural light and great views over the neighbouring loch. Sleeping up to six in two kingsize beds and a sofa bed, these cabins make a fabulous base for a break with family or friends – although they’re also a really lovely option for a cosy break with just your other half and the dog. As well as the bedrooms, each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfy sofa to flop out on. The stylish modern shower room is one highlight – and the other is the secluded hot tub out on the deck. It’s a truly special spot for a sunset drink or an evening of stargazing – and as you’ll be in an international dark skies park here, the stargazing should be spectacular on a clear night. It’s likely you’ll feel like you’re many miles from modern life here, but in fact that’s not the case – handily, Castle Douglas is only about five minutes’ drive away. As a designated food town, it’s an excellent source of places to eat and shops for your barbecue supplies.

Local attractions

Cosying up in your cabin is certainly a viable choice for guests at Galloway Glamping, but there are also heaps of options for getting out to explore the fabulous scenery of the surrounding area. Galloway Forest Park (10 minutes' drive) has hiking and mountain biking trails galore, and there are more walks over at the coast – the trail from Rockcliffe (25 minutes) is a local favourite. Loch Ken, right by the site, is another activity hotspot – bring your fishing kit, launch your kayaks, canoes or paddleboards, or hire kit from local adventure centres for days out on the water. For gentler days out, take a wander around the National Trust-owned Threave Garden & Nature Reserve (10 minutes) or head to Dumfries (half an hour) to visit the Robert Burns Centre. If you’re here on a family holiday you may also like to take a look at child-friendly attractions like Mabie Farm Park (35 minutes) and Dino Park at Hetland (45 minutes).
