  • Stylish lodges with stunning views, 10 minutes from Castle Douglas
  • A 10-minute drive to Kirkcudbright; 20 minutes to Galloway Forest Park
  • Walking trails and horse riding centre on site
It’s tricky to decide which is more attractive at Barstobrick Holiday Lodges: the stunning scenery of the Dumfries and Galloway countryside or the stylish interiors… But as it happens you can admire both at the same time thanks to the large windows specially designed to make the most of the gorgeous views towards the Galloway Hills. Want a closer look? This site between Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright (and about 10 minutes’ drive from either) is in a great position for exploring both countryside and coast, with several walking trails starting just outside the lodges and maps available to buy to make sure you don’t go astray. For an alternative way to get around, sign up for horseback treks from the riding centre on site – it’s got outings for all abilities, plus lessons for those who need a bit of guidance (booking ahead is advised for all riding activities). And if all this sounds a little tiring? Simply settle at the table and chairs on your deck, pour a drink and sit back to admire the views over the pond to the hills beyond. That outdoor table also makes a fine setting for an alfresco breakfast, which you can have delivered to your lodge in a hamper for an extra charge. Inside your lodge, it’s all comfy and smart – each one has a kingsize bed, kitchenette, Smart TV and an ensuite shower room.

Local attractions

It’s really straightforward to start exploring the locality from Barstobrick, as it has marked-out walking trails running direct from the site. Pick up maps at reception for a scenic stroll along the two-kilometre Ridge Trail or the longer 5.5-km Hot Blast Trail. For mini travellers, the kilometre-long Galloway Faerie Trail is the one: it’s buggy- and wheelchair-friendly and filled with magical things to spot along the way… For longer spells, try the trails through the Galloway Forest (20 minutes’ drive) or steel yourself for the 7Stanes Dalbeattie mountain bike trails (25 minutes). You may well spot wildlife along the way, but for guaranteed sightings you’ll want the Red Kite Feeding Station (10 minutes). Elsewhere, you may like to seek out sea air at Mossyard beach (20 minutes), play golf at Birhouse Bay (25 minutes) or wander around Cardoness Castle (15 minutes). Foodie Castle Douglas and arty Kirkcudbright are both 10 minutes’ drive away for some town time.

The Pond 1 bedroom lodge

Liked: Modern, well designed, fully equipped lodges with wonderful views both front and back. The Fairy Glen adventure for youngsters and the excellent 3 hour 'Puzzle Trail' walk for adults were excellent additions for guests to attempt. Although the latter was perhaps a bit too difficult as far as finding and understanding the clues was concerned. Especially the 'Walled Garden" section. All the entry doors/gates were either locked or had barriers (wood and canisters) holding them shut from the inside. But if you are brave enough to 'take the chance' of a land owner chasing you off his/her land then the feeling of having found the answer was worth it. Well done Barstobrick!

Disliked: Nothing, excellent service from staff/family members. Friendly advice!

The Pond 1 bedroom lodge

Liked: Clean, modern and comfortable. The view from the bed was breathtaking, I will never forget watching Red Kites soaring in the sky, whilst sat in bed with my brew. Just beautiful. The location was perfect for going Scottish Wildlife Hides with Alan. It was also a great location for visiting local towns etc. We couldn’t recommend this place enough.

Disliked: As far as equipment we felt it could have benefitted from a couple of coat hooks, a dust pan and brush and a casserole dish, and if being cheeky perhaps a couple of Prosecco glasses 😊
