  • Peaceful rural site on 40 acres of farm and woods a mile from Catrine
  • Half an hour's drive from the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayr
  • Wildlife walks, firepits and Ayr river fishing on site
A peaceful spot with rural views all around, ripe for hours of nature walks and fishing, but with the added bonus of easy access directly off the A76 – what a winning combo. Catrine House is a family-run campsite that's been operating here for more than 60 years. The Ayr river runs through the farm’s grounds and a river path runs along the site boundary, so bring your kit for a bit of fishing, or enlist some expert help from the owners if you need a little tuition in the skills. Lots of walks (including circular walks) also start from here, and maps are provided. The vibe here may be decidedly rural, but you’re hardly cut off in the middle of nowhere: there’s an excellent café a mile away in Catrine, and a couple of food pubs within a few minutes’ drive. If you can’t be enticed away from your countryside idyll, you’re welcome to light up a firepit (provided; logs are sold on site too), or have dinner delivered to the site from the local Chinese, Indian or fish and chip shop.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (riverside)

Liked: Lovely area, showers and toilets were clean, has a wet area you can go into, my only bug bear was i was camped next to stored caravans, not very scenic at all, I had booked a different area by the water but was told it was closed due to being water logged, i was very disappointed as that's what attracted me to the campsite

Disliked: Looking at stored caravans, would be 5* otherwise

Liked: Pitch layouts were a good distance apart and hook up was close too. Picnic benches available to use outdoors if you needed them. Indoor room with dining tables and chairs, log burner, board games, TV and dart board. All facilities were super clean. Very friendly guy running it.

Disliked: Noise from traffic as it is close to a very busy A road.

Local attractions

Rabbie Burns fans will do well around this area: it’ll take you around half an hour to get to Ayr to visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and the poet’s childhood home, now known as Burns Cottage. The 15th-century Brig o’ Doon (the setting for Tam o' Shanter) is a short trot from these attractions, and you can finish your day following in Burns’ footsteps with a pint at Poosie Nansies Inn, a couple of miles from the site. Ayr’s also a great place for a seaside walk or beach paddle; for more activity, there’s a riding centre 20 minutes’ drive from Catrine House and a golf course just a couple of minutes away. Horsey types may well also want to drop in on the gentle giants at Blackstone Clydesdales, 10 minutes away. For a slice of history, take a 20-minute ramble to the rock art site at Ballochmyle, or drive for 10 minutes to the 2,000-acre estate of Dumfries House, home to some gorgeous gardens and a splendid Chippendale collection.
