  • Luxurious log cabin with Loch Sunart views near Strontian in Argyll
  • A 40-minute drive to Tioram Castle, Ardnamurchan Distillery 45 minutes
  • Well insulated with woodburning stove; pub and shop five minutes’ walk
Peace and quiet. Loch views. Plenty of space and little luxuries inside. Yep, Ronaldsay Cabin has all these and more. Carefully maintained and sitting high above Loch Sunart just outside Strontian on the wild Ardnamurchan Peninsula, this log cabin is totally private and secluded yet only five minutes’ walk from the nearest pub and shop. Fully insulated and with roof windows flooding the interior with natural light, the cabin has loads of living space in the form of two sitting areas each with wifi, flatscreen TV with Freesat and Blu-Ray player (that’s any rainy days taken care of then). As well as those stunning Loch Sunart views, the main lounge has a woodburning stove to keep everyone cosy, while the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area to the rear faces south towards the mountains. Three bedrooms sleep up to five guests – and all have gorgeous views, so there’s no need to squabble over which bedroom to have. Hot water is provided through a thermal store, giving fantastic mains-pressure showers in the bathrooms – a welcome treat after a day out in the glen. There’s also a utility room that's handy for storing muddy boots and soggy coats. Want some fresh air to go with those fine views? There are two decks, one to the front and one to the rear, so you can follow the sun as the day progresses. Please note that Ronaldsay Cabin sits on an elevated site on a fairly steep hill, so there are risks around the garden for very young children. Please keep them closely supervised.

Local attractions

Nature lovers might well spot otters, seals and birds of prey from the Garbh Eilean Wildlife Hide (15 minutes' drive), while the hills, glens and forests around Strontian are heaven for walkers, cyclists and anglers. Hike or cycle to the lochside ruins of long-deserted Tioram Castle (40 minutes) on a section of the circular Silver Trail, walk along Loch Shiel or drive to Kentra (both half an hour) and take the forest path to the seemingly endless beach nicknamed ‘Singing Sands’. To explore a bit further, drive the winding lane to Ardnamurchan Point for wild Atlantic views from Ardnamurchan Lighthouse (the westernmost point of mainland Scotland). Close by, go wild swimming off the white sands at sheltered Sanna Bay (both an hour and 20 minutes) while you admire views of the tiny islets of Eigg and Rum. And for a change of scenery, take the ferry over to the Isle of Mull for the day from Kilchoan (an hour, look out for dolphins on boat trip), or send a happy hour or two tasting artisan whisky at Ardnamurchan Distillery (45 minutes).
