General

  • Wooden glamping with sauna on a Scottish island
  • Quiet rural retreat: see the Northern Lights from here
  • A 10-mile drive from the harbour at Tobermory

Wooden glamping – with sauna – on a Scottish island? How spectacular.

Eco Camping Cabin is in the small village of Salen on the island of Mull, 10 miles from Tobermory. It has accommodation built using traditional techniques and recycled materials where possible... and is also home to a sauna cabin for blissful dips in splendid setting: you might even see the Northern Lights blazing overhead.

The units have no running water or electricity, but water can be obtained outside and there's an eco-friendly earth-composting toilet for guests' use. For supplies and wandering, Salen village has local amenities and is a good base from which to explore the scenery of Mull, and see the wildlife on land and at sea.

There's top cycling and walking all over the island, with plenty of quiet beaches and historic attractions to pass.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Chilled out all round with all the amenities you could ask for. Hosts were really nice and left me to it. There was a sauna & plunge pool but I was too tired after my bike ride and hike.
Ideal place to shelter you from the elements and make use of the camp fire/ veranda etc.

We stayed in the wonderful log cabin. Everything had been carefully thought through to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Highlights were eating breakfast at the outside table with beautiful views and the sauna cabin. Good location for cycling around Mull. Will recommend to friends!

From the manager...

Just to say you had changed cabins, from the pod to the cabin as the pod does not have the sauna, so pleased you enjoyed your stay. And thank you for the lovely comment . Tim and Diane

The cabin itself was lovely, well equipped and the sauna was amazing. Lovely views and we regularly saw deer and owls whilst sitting out on the veranda.

    Disliked:

It is a bit of a muddy path down to the cabins but all fine with the correct footwear.

We loved the concept of being off the grid and offline, the simplicity of staying here and the peace and quiet. Despite no electricity or running water, we were warm and comfortable here, the kids (aged 5 and 3) loved the composting toilet and the plunge pool. The views from the porch are wonderful, great place for a morning coffee or an evening nightcap. The quality of the cabins and provisions were (for us) excellent and the site just perfect - the description is accurate, so you can decide whether this place is right for you and your requirements.

    Disliked:

The walk down to the cabins could perhaps be improved.

From the manager...

So sorry you disliked the sofa bed. may be next time you could try the camp beds also provided. Or perhaps bring an air mattress if you think that would be better for you. Thank you for your review we do take all comments on board.

it has been difficult to find and when we arrived, the way of doing things isn't easy either.
the owner didn't propose us to have towels and bed sheets.
i wouldn't recomand it for more than 1 or 2 nights because it's small, you can't really open the doors because of the midges and it's kind of hot inside.

From the manager...

Hi thank you for your feed back sorry you found check in not easy, Bedding and towels are not put in the pod unless you ask at booking for them, There is also a notice in the pod saying sleeping bags can be hired for a small charge of £2.50 we are sorry if you missed this notice in the information folder. I am not sure when you visited the pod but since mid June we have had a midge magnet working and that is now thinning out the midges.

Local attractions

No need to go very far to arrange days out from around here: pony trekking is available from the Killiechronan Estate a few miles away, and you only have to wander for about 10 minutes to reach the ruins on Aros Castle, scenically set overlooking the Sound of Mull. This last is a splendid spot for a picnic: bag your supplies at the shops and the coffee shop in Salen.

After both pony trekking and picnic, plus many walks around the coast, take to the car for 20 minutes to get to the island's capital Tobermory, famed for its colourful harbour (which is mighty pretty indeed). Arrange whale and dolphin spotting boat trips from town, or potter around its streets for the Mull Museum, the Tobermory whisky distillery and Mull Aquarium.

Mull is a top spot for wildlife watching and nature spotting, with thousands of plant species recorded as well as over 260 types of bird and a cute collection of otters living around the coast. Sharks and porpoises as well as whales and dolphins can be seen in the waters around Mull, so do be sure to bag that marine mammal spotting trip back in Tobermory.
