General

  • In the Loughcrew hills 45 minutes from Dublin
  • Peaceful surroundings with mature trees, museum and events hall
  • Close to the ancient Loughcrew complex

A lot of – OK, most of – Ireland is properly ancient. But one of the ancientest areas in all the land is the Loughcrew complex, a collection of megalithic burial grounds dating back to around 3500—3300BC and the biggest mass of passage graves in Ireland. Cor.

And near all this ancientness is warm and friendly Loughcrew Megalithic Centre, set in the Loughcrew Hills 45 minutes from Dublin and two hours from Galway. It has quite a bit more than you'd expect from a standard campsite: a traditional Irish courtyard, a 'Hag's Chair' for the kids to sit on, a top quality playground and, our favourite, Benny's Workshop, an events hall where guests can have their own function or go along to one of the many trad music sessions.

Among the other well-kept facilities at Loughcrew are its on-site café, TV and games room, and spankingly clean loos and showers. And, another thing you wouldn't expect at a standard campsite, a heritage museum on seventeenth century Ireland is in its courtyard too.

We, and the majority of campers, were attending a large event nearby and the staff took advantage of this. They organised music and a BBQ, which was a great idea and we admire the ambition here and would have attended. However the total charge for these two was €17, if the cost was €10 this would have been enough to cover their costs and still make a profit. The staff seemed greedy with the €17 cost.

From the manager...

Ah guys! Thanks for the constructive feedback but I think there might have been a little misunderstanding. Sorry about the miscommunication between ourselves and ye.

We totally get what your saying about the €17 but it was €7/adult into the courtyard to see the live music, kids were free. The burgers were optional at €4 each. Even though we sell wine it was a bring your own beer/wine event to help keep cost down for the campers.

The €7 went towards costs, music and will help support the Le Cheile Music and Arts Festival that is in our local town on August Bank Holiday weekend. Its in its 20th year and is ran by volunteers with a passion for music and arts.

I hope ye got on well at the local event and drank plenty of water from the hill of the witch.

We really do appreciate the constructive criticism and hopefully will see you back at Loughcrew sometime soon.

Where to start.. first its is badly signed posted and hard to find. Also there is a very steep incline on the main riad up which is not good fir the car towing a caravan. One cars clutch actuall broke going up it. No where for kids to ride their bikes as the ground was so rough with stones . . Only one male toilet and shower which meant queing to use.also dhere flooded on the sunday morning. Noone was there to check us in and park was over booked . Caravans on road/pathway to tent area. .
Iwill nit be back or recommanding it to my friends.

Also we paid €60 with pitch up for 2 nts but loughcrew were doing 2nts and 3rd free for €40. . So i feel riped off after such a poor stay.

From the manager...

Hello,

Thanks for your comments. Yes we did a one time special offer for the weekend you booked to stay. We have managed to put down a new smoother finish since you stayed. We are coming into our second season now and a better surface has been a goal since the beginning. We are waiting for planning permission to put up appropriate signage. Unfortunately we cant do anything about the steepness of the roads but the view is well worth it from the highest point in the Boyne Valley. Over half of Ireland can be seen from the Loughcrew Passage tombs. Our playground, games room and the Loughcrew hills are great for kids. They can play in a safe environment. Mullaghmeen is the largest Beech forest in Europe, Virginia forest has a lake bordering it and we are surrounded by country roads that are great for cycling. Park was not overbooked and you were checked in by the manager when he visited your camper.

We appreciate your visit to Loughcrew. It is a shame it did not work out the way we both hoped. As a new business we are always looking for ways to improve.

Take care,

Niall

Local attractions

The Loughcrew complex has about 23 passage tombs, spread across three hilltops and etched with ancient carvings. Like the other ancient site in Co Meath, Newgrange, Loughcrew's Cairn T was designed to catch the rays of the rising sun on the spring and autumnal equinox: if you're around the area in May or September, Loughcrew Megalithic Centre organises events in Benny's Workshop to mark the occasions.

The 20-minute walk and climb to the top of Carnbane East, one of the Loughcrew hills, will have you at the highest point in Meath to see smashing views of 18 Irish counties: it's at this point that we'd pretend to be an ancient king or queen.

More walking can be had among the many routes of Mullaghmeen Forest, the biggest planted beech forest in Ireland, and more activity at Loughcrew Adventure Centre 3km away.

You could also spend hours at Cavan County Museum, or at Tayto Park theme park and zoo: for those not in the know, Tayto is a bit of an Irish Thing and no trip to the land is complete without a bag of their cheese and onion crisps pressed between two thick slices of buttered white bread.
