A rainforest… on the coast of Ireland? It's true indeed – and the Rivendell rainforest is just one of the unusual wonders you can expect to encounter when you stay at Skyhil Gypsy Caravans… This character-packed County Cork site is tucked away in a peaceful spot on the Beara Peninsula near the village of Glengarriff and surrounded by gorgeous landscapes of mountains, rivers, lakes – and that rainforest. It’s also just a few minutes' drive from the coast and the route of the Wild Atlantic Way, the famed driving route that runs for 1600 miles along Ireland’s west coast. There's something of a magical air at this site, partly because of its fantasy-inspired decor and partly because of the very secluded location. The final mile of the approach to the site is inaccessible for regular cars, so you’ll need to be in a four-wheel drive or park up and hike the last stretch. What you’ll find when you complete that journey is a colourful caravan that’s kitted out with a double mattress and pillows (you'll need to bring your own bedding though). The caravans are off grid and designed to provide just the basics – so you won't have any electricity, wifi or shower facilities, but there’s a compost toilet and you can get back to nature by bathing in the pond. Simple shared kitchen facilities (cooker, drinking water, crockery and cutlery) are in an old shed, and there's a campfire area with a wood store where you can chop your own logs. When you're not involved in such tasks, you can be out exploring your fabulous surroundings – the site has direct access to a large ancient forest with lots of hill walks, swimming ponds and historic interest at places like Skyhil Stone Circle.

Liked: Nice Host, with much time, space and lots of stories. If you don't need elecricity, it's a very nice diversion to all the hotels and holiday-appartments. The free use of fire-wood safed our dinner in the nature.

Disliked: No normal toilet (but that's camping at Tonys).
