General

  • Small and friendly site in Doonbeg on the Wild Atlantic Way
  • A few steps from the bay with direct access to the beach
  • Short stroll to pubs, restaurants and shops

A beach, and a bay, and the Wild Atlantic Way... all are smashing strands of an Irish seaside hol.

Pitch up steps from the water with direct access to the beach at Co Clare's Strand Camping, a small and friendly site in Doonbeg on the Wild Atlantic Way and a short stroll from pubs, restaurants and shops. Strand Camping's owners are committed camping connoisseurs who've used their expertise and experience to sort a welcoming and immaculate site: 'a little peace of heaven' is just one accolade among many made by chuffed former guests.

For activities, surfing is easily sorted from here; Jacques Cousteau has hailed nearby Kilkeel as the best diving spot in all of Europe, and golfers may be keen to hear that Doonbeg is home to a golf club named in 2013 as the best resort in Europe...

Back at your peaceful base, the spotless amenities include toilet blocks with free hot showers (a short walk from the pitching area), a launderette and a washing-up area; there's also free wifi.

Excellent campsite and Jamie and Amanda were amazing hosts to the campsite as well as informing us of what there was in the surrounding area. Campsite clean and perfectly formed. Toilets and showers were immaculate and showers were free which is rare in Southern Ireland. Amanda and Jamie were most helpful with whatever you asked them and nothing was too much trouble. The price per night was amazing 12.00euros. I commend the dog exercise area which our dog loved very well thought of area and havent seen this anywhere else. We would highly reccomend this site and wouldnt hesitate to use it again, wish campsites were all this good. Diane and Tom April 2018

Liked almost everything. It’s a small site (maybe 25 pitches) but that’s a good thing. Very friendly, helpful and courteous owners. Facilities excellent and spotlessly clean. Liked the bathroom idea where there are individual and spacious bathrooms each with sink, toilet and a good quality shower. Price was fair and reasonable. Very handy for Doonbeg village with a choice of pubs serving good quality food (10 mins walk in, allow 20 mins for way back!).

    Disliked:

The WiFi signal wasn’t great but I understand that the owners are working on it and hope to improve. This is a very minor comment relative to the site overall which was very good.

Room was made for us even though I stupidly booked the wrong week for us to stay at the campsite. We were welcomed whole heartedly even though we were not meant to be there until a week later. Camp site small but perfect in every way. A stones throw away from the sea and close to all of the amazing things County Clare has to offer. The owners of the campsite have amazing local knowledge and thanks to them we had an amazing couple of days road tripping along coastal roads and sightseeing. Facilities excellent and very clean.

Jamie and Amanda will make you very welcome, showing you round there small site. Which is immaculately clean and tidy. The toilets and showers are new and again always sparkling clean. Would recommend this site for anyone ideal if you are just staying a night or as we did for two weeks. Great large dog run and a fenced in area for the children to play football in. We will be back.

Local attractions

It's the matter of a minute's walk to get to the bay from here, and there's direct access to the beach for peaceful sandy times. Surfing and other watersports are a minute or two away too; diving is under 10 minutes' drive away at Kilkee, and hiking and cycling are all around: the site owners have extensive local knowledge and can let you know the best routes.

Local village Doonbeg is on the Wild Atlantic Way, the scenic coastal route running from the Inishowen peninsula in Co Donegal a mighty 2,500 kilometres all the way down to Kinsale in Co Cork. You can drive to the world-famed Cliffs of Moher easily from the site too (you should reach them in about 50 minutes) and you're also within day trip distance of The Burren and Loop Head lighthouse, each under an hour away.

The Killimer to Tarbert river ferry, linking Co Clare to Co Kerry, is about 25 minutes' drive away.
