  • Quiet, family-run campsite in the village of Doolin
  • On the Burren Way, a short walk from the Cliffs of Moher path
  • Lounge area and communal kitchen; Aran Islands ferries 30 minutes walk
The Wild Atlantic Way, the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, Doonagore Castle… a collection of County Clare sights to stir the soul? If nods of approval ensue, get over to Aille River Tourist Hostel and Camping for days ambling around them all. This small site should be a nice place to recharge or explore, as it's set alongside the river Aille and right in the centre of Doolin village. A 15-minute walk from the site leads to the Cliffs of Moher walking trail, passing Celtic remnants and native wildflowers; if you’re feeling particularly energetic, the 71-mile Burren Way, which passes through the town, should satisfy your thirst for further activity. (And if you’re not keen on walking, a road trip on the Wild Atlantic Way is an equally good way to spend a few days…). Walking’s not the only pastime locally, of course – climbing, caving, diving, golf, horse riding and sea kayaking might also feature on your agenda, along with ferry trips over to the Aran Islands. The ferries depart from Doolin pier, half an hour's walk away from the site. Back at base, the family-run site has clean bathrooms with toilets and hot showers, and a pleasingly spacious kitchen with piles of cookery kit. There’s a dining room and lounge area where you can warm up by the fire if it’s been a tad damp out. Free maps of the local area are available, and breakfast is served for a small extra charge.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful place, for the price you get services like accessbto cheap washer and drier machine, breakfast for 2 euros, free showers, access to a fully stocked kitchen. I pitched a tent in a beautiful place between a cool river and a beautiful stone wall. Ideal to trek to the Cliffs of Moher. The staff let me use a guitar to make ambiance. It was great.

Disliked: There are no supermarket nearby. Bring supplies.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The camping was lovely. First of all the bathroom, the guest room and the kitchen were very clear and cozy. In the kitchen there was a lot of space and everything we needed for cooking. We stayed just one night but we had the opportunity to talk and enjoy the company of many interesting people. Great location and a wonderful sunset. Hope to come back soon :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean facilities and ease of checking in. I was just tenting for one night, but everything was available for a very reasonable price. I will use this camping site again.

Disliked: Didn't see a dryer or towels at the wash hand basins.

Local attractions

You can certainly give your walking boots a good workout around these parts: the Cliffs of Moher walking trail (a 15-minute walk from town) is stacked with stunning views, and there’s plenty more to see around the Burren area’s limestone pavements and karsts. Board a boat from Doolin for the half-hour ride to the Aran Islands for some more fab landscapes, cliffs and ancient Celtic bits and bobs. Brave enough to get into the sea? Doolin’s a popular scuba spot and there’s a dive centre 15 minutes’ drive away where you can sort such an outing. The Doolin Cave System awaits those who’d rather see below the surface of the land, and the town’s also got a nine-hole pitch-and-putt course for folk who are quite happy with two feet on the ground, ta. If it all sounds a little tiring, set out instead for the 20-minute walk to seafront Doonagore Castle or pile into the car for the 15-minute drive to Moher Hill Open Farm, where you can meet new furry pals, play miniature golf and see if you can spot any visitors flitting about at the fairy tree.
