  • Adults-only glamping five minutes’ drive from Donaghadee, County Down
  • Strangford Lough and Mount Stewart both 15 minutes’ drive
  • Luxury lakeside shepherd’s hut with a private hot tub and firepit
When it’s time to leave the kids at home and get to know your other half again, how about going glamping in County Down? Set in a peaceful location, the cosy, lakeside wooden shepherd’s hut at Four Acres Farm is a hideaway just made for two. The handcrafted pod is a beguiling combination of tradition and thoroughly modern comfort, with a smart interior decked out by a cosy double bed, a modern ensuite bathroom with shower and lots of designer touches like pretty cushions and wicker storage hampers. Set foot outside and you’re in your private garden, where you can rustle up a barbecue for two on the firepit or laze in your hot tub and chill with waterside views; time your soak for a clear evening and you’ll witness colourful sunsets, and later you can stargaze together from your rural hideaway too. Beyond the shepherd’s hut, the site has 50 acres of farmland to explore (any dogs along for the ride will be pleased to hear this). Stroll through the fields and find romantic spots to picnic, enjoy a good book or simply relax surrounded by nature. If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, the North Down Coastal Path heads west from Orlock (15 minutes), and there are spectacular beaches like Millisle (five minutes) to frolic around on.

Local attractions

Head to the fishing village of Donaghadee (five minutes’ drive) for views of the landmark lighthouse and across the Irish Sea to the Scottish coastline (on most days, as this is weather-dependent) from the 19th-century folly atop its medieval mound. There are also plenty of waterside pubs, cafés and restaurants in which to while away afternoons with your beloved. Stretch your legs and those of any canines on waterside walks at Strangford Lough (15 minutes), taking binoculars with you to see if you can spot red squirrels in the woodland and otters near the shoreline. Drive round the lake to the peaceful relics of the monastic site at Nendrum (40 minutes), or the spectacular, pink-stoned and crumbling Greyabbey Monastery (15 minutes). There’s more local history and culture to be ingested at National Trust-owned Mount Stewart (15 minutes), a grand, mid-19th-century mansion open for tours of its sumptuous interiors. If you feel like a full day’s sightseeing, head to Belfast (40 minutes) to visit the interactive displays at Titanic Belfast and the maritime museum aboard the neighbouring ‘SS Nomadic’.
