  • Dog-friendly Wiltshire retreat on a smallholding just off the A350
  • A 15-minute drive to the Kennet and Avon Canal; 35 minutes to Bath
  • A five-minute drive from pubs and takeaways; walking trails nearby
Towpath adventures, country walks, Roman baths and laidback pub crawls? If you’re liking the sound of all of the above, Littleton Retreat has the recipe. Located on a smallholding just off the A350 in Littleton, Semington, your Wiltshire wanderlust will be well treated here. Make your way to the Kennet and Avon Canal, 15 minutes’ drive away, for peaceful towpath bike rides and days of boating, or take yourself off-piste onto various local walks. Melksham, the local town, is 45 minutes’ walk from the site if you fancy a takeaway. Or perhaps you might want to plot out your own route for a relaxed, daytime pub crawl (the first pub is a short drive or cycle away) in and around Melksham. Littleton Retreat is a well-maintained site with mainly level grassy pitches. It’s a simple sort of getaway – the type where guests can fully unwind without too many distractions (unless you count the towpath adventures and Bath’s many Roman sites and cobbled streets, 35 minutes’ drive away, that is). The facilities consist of toilets, showers, a washing-up area, several drinking water points, a grey waste point, an Elsan point and a recycling waste point.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a really nice weekend at Littleton. The site is really well maintained and the toilet/shower facilities are clean and functional.
The host is amazing. Very friendly and even loaned us an extension lead when ours wasn't working. We have quite a big tent and the host was very flexible about overhanging the pitch.
The kids really enjoyed the playground on-site, which kept them entertained for hours.
Highly recommended!

Disliked Minor inconvenience: would be worth sharing the gate lock code with visitors either by email before arrival, or giving them a card with the code on arrival.
As others have mentioned, there are wasps in the area, although there's not much that can be done about that. Remember to bring insect repellent and fly traps.

From the manager: Thanks for your great review, iam glad everyone enjoyed there stay, I’ve taken on board about the gate code, always willing to here suggestions, thanks ady.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Laid-back, not-too-big site, suitable for different kinds of camping (tarps, tents, camper vans, caravans, etc), with plenty of space on each plot. Really tidy and clean, and pretty secure, too, with a padlocked gate. Good location - easy to get to and from.
I really appreciated the proprietor allowing me to leave my van in a corner while my son and I did a circular bike ride and then came back for it. That was very helpful.

Disliked As other reviewers have said, there is some road noise. It's obviously noticeable, being very close to a fairly fast road, but it wasn't all that bad. We slept well! It's also not something that could be mitigated for, so it's only a minor issue, easily made-up for by the rest of the place.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked This was only the 2nd time staying in our caravan but from someone who's worked and knows behind the scenes behind some big companies this little site was immaculate. We arrived late which wasn't a problem. All the facilities were immaculate the showers and toilets from inside you would never get they were just little units in a field. The washing up area, the refuse area even down to the bbq wash..everything tiny detail here was thought about. My only tiny critique is the play area..its an open fenced area in the field but with a sign that says dont use private playpark which for a family with 2 young children under 4 it was hard to keep them away. But after reading some other reviews we thought maybe it is okay to use so we did and the kids loved it so if this is something for guests then this little retreat really does live up to the name and we had a lovely 2 night stay. If we're ever back that way we will definitely stay again. Also it was very nice to meet ade the owner and again thank you for your understanding in our lateness.

From the manager: Thanks for your amazing review, we take great pride in our site and are always upto suggestions, and always happy to help, yes the children love the play area and are welcome to use it as long as there parents monitor them, lovely meeting you all, see you again thanks ady.

Liked Small site, well cared for, clean, shade for tents, clean facilities

Disliked Road noise quite loud some times, only 2 showers so may have to wait during busier times.

Local attractions

What will Wiltshire serve you up? There’s medieval architecture, a brewery and a working set of Shire horses in Devizes (15 minutes’ drive) – that might make you feel like you’re back in the olden’ days. The same goes for Trowbridge (10 minutes), which is one of 23 Magna Carta towns (very important places 800 years back in time). Nowadays, it has a splendid weekly market and great shopping streets. Tick off a bucket list item while you’re making your way around, as the stone circle of Stonehenge (half an hour) isn’t too far away either. Avebury (half an hour) has another ancient stone circle, which is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. If you’re not quite done with the historical itinerary, Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes) on the river Avon has an ancient bridge, 19th-century cloth mills and old weavers’ cottages. There’s an Elizabethan manor house in Longleat (half an hour) too, but another big attraction there is the drive-in safari park where monkeys can clamber over your car and lions can stride past your vehicle.
