Shepherd's huts and outdoor kitchen

  • Off-grid shepherd’s huts 10 minutes’ walk to Castle Combe in Wiltshire
  • Lacock village 15 minutes’ drive and historic Bath 40 minutes
  • Woodfired hot tub and outdoor kitchen; motor racing 10 minutes’ walk
Looking for a little luxury on your Wiltshire getaway? Spacious shepherd’s huts on the edge of gorgeous Castle Combe village, 10 minutes’ drive from Chippenham, sound about right to you? The huts are situated in a fledgling orchard with a large, fenced-off outdoor space, and a trolley is available to lug your gear from the car park to your pitch. Heated by woodburning stoves, each shepherd’s hut sleeps up to three in a bunk and double bed arrangement, and has a dining table and storage, as well as games and books to borrow. Nearby is an outdoor kitchen with a gas hob, plus a firepit/barbecue (wood supplied) and seating areas. The separate, exclusive-use bathroom hut has a shower and eco-friendly toiletries, and you also have use of a woodfired hot tub with bathrobes and towels supplied. All the site’s amenities are off grid and solar powered, so there is no TV, hairdryer, microwave or wifi reception. What you will have, however, is a great base for walking, golfing, cycling or car racing (Castle Combe Circuit is 10 minutes’ walk away, there can be noise on event days), and a warm welcome for any dogs, with beds, towels and bowls awaiting their arrival. As light pollution is minimal, you can also enjoy stargazing (possibly from the hot tub) on cloudless evenings.

Local attractions

First stop on your Wiltshire adventure will perhaps be a wander around the cottages built of honey-coloured stone in Castle Combe (20 minutes’ walk), location of scenes from films like ‘Warhorse’ and ‘Dr Doolittle’. If dates coincide, you can watch the car races at Castle Combe Circuit (10 minutes), and there’s an 18-hole golf course (20 minutes) in the village as well. The Georgian-era National Trust village of Lacock (15 minutes’ drive) is another well-known film location; Harry Potter scenes were filmed at the 13th-century abbey, which is open for tours of its cloisters, grounds and museum of photography. There are artisan shops and a couple of traditional pubs to check out as well. Bradford-on-Avon (half an hour) is another upmarket shopping spot with leafy walks along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Other possible day trips include elegant Bath (40 minutes), where you can explore the ancient Roman baths and then enjoy a thoroughly 21st-century spa experience at Thermae Bath Spa.
