  • Rural Somerset green-energy site five minutes' drive from Yeovil
  • Handy stopover point on journeys to Devon or Cornwall
  • Next door to a traditional inn with top-quality food and a lake
It will, of course, rather depend on your starting point and final destination. But if you’re Devon- or Cornwall-bound on the A303, it’s quite possible that The Halfway Caravan and Camping Park will indeed offer a handy stopover roughly halfway through the journey. There’s rather more to this small and rural Somerset green-energy site than simply a place to flop for the night though... For starters, fab views can be had over the surrounding fields and farmland, and there's easy access to a whole bunch of townie amenities five minutes' drive away in Yeovil. On top of that, it’s surely always a bonus to note that there’s an inn next door – especially when it happens to be one that serves up top-notch grub and has a lakeside trail for post-drive leg-stretching. It's worth resisting the urge to get straight back on the road here, as the park is in an excellent location for days out. Those who settle in for several days can hit Weymouth's beach, Stourhead's gardens, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole with a leisurely drive of an hour or so, or take to local trails for rambles or rides. Between day trips, there's space on site for kids and dogs to have a bit of a run about while the grownups put their feet up, pour a glass of something (ideally something local, this being cider country) and gently stoke the barbecue coals. One final thing to add to the list of great features here? The owners are proud that this is a firmly eco-friendly site powered by 100% renewable energy.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Stayed on a hard standing (#2), there was a slight slope across the pitch but parked fairly level with no ramps on one side of it.
Shower block was much nicer than expected (they were actively building the one we were next to). We didn't realise there were more shower blocks elsewhere on the site, so if you go, don't assume all the loos are in use!
A little road noise but we found it nice and quiet with no disturbances.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We stayed one night on a non electric grass pitch right next to a lake shaded by trees. The owners went out of there way to make us feel more than welcome. Food was wonderful in the on site pub, we had Thai but there was plenty of choice for other dishes, all freshly cooked. Gas cylinder exchange was cheap and easy. Showers were very clean and amazing. Thankyou for a lovely stay and we will definately be returning.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Convenient for road/connections.
Lakeside setting.
Free choice of pitching.
Spread out.
Fair price for facilities etc.
Quiet after curfew time.

Disliked Not clear on arrival where to go, how to check in, where pitch was etc.
Not enough showers or toilets.
Piles of waste at rear of site (near pitches).

From the manager: Dear Catherine Ellis
Thank you for your review and the positive comments. I will address the negative comments.

You must need a visit to Specsavers as the site is clearly signed posted and each pitch (other than park anywhere around the lake) is clearly named. If you find it difficult to follow signs i.e reception its not really our fault.

As for the toilets there are 4 wet rooms on site a for 12 pitches (i think that's enough) the few building materials are in the hotel car park not on the campsite.

Not sure what you wanted for £20.

Am very happy to hear you will not be coming back.

Lakeview Grass electric grass pitch

Liked A great place to stop for a few days. Lots of work being done to bring this site up to a good standard. Pitches were clearly marked if you had booked any pitch apart from non electric tent pitch then you could go wherever you liked around the lake. The toilet/ shower sheds were clean and not to far from any of the pitches. There was work being done to the old toilet block and from what we could see will be of a good standard once finished.
A good idea with the shower was that there was a button to push which gave you 15 minutes for a shower and it also powered the light around the mirror if you need it, the main light for the shed was on a motion sensor so stayed on the whole time you were in there.
The pub was very welcoming and we were asked at check in if we wanted to eat there that night as they like to make sure people who are staying get a space to eat before they take walk ins. We ate on the Friday and Sunday night and the food was of a good standard, reasonably priced and a decent amount.
The locals and staff made us feel welcome in the pub and nothing was too much trouble for them.
We were able to watch the birds flying over the lake and adjoining fields.
There is some road noise but when you have just pulled off of a main A road it has to be expected and we were able to ignore it.
We will use the site again if we are in the area.

Disliked Not dislikes but a couple of suggestions, a path from the lake view pitches to the new toilet/shower building as it is located behind the fully serviced pitches and people may not realise it's there as it's tucked away. Also there is potential for someone to book a non electric pitch and pitch in front of the lake view ehu pitches blocking the view as whilst we were there camper vans parked around the other side of the lake. It might be worth explaining to people not to pitch in front of those 4 pitches by the lake as it would block the view.

Local attractions

The surrounds here are the kind of classic English scenery that gets folk all misty-eyed. If you're looking for a pretty place to potter, make for Montacute, 10 minutes’ drive away: its streets have featured in several films including Sense & Sensibility and Elizabeth. Scenic strolls are in good supply around here: the National Trust’s stunning Stourhead estate is 25 minutes away by car, and the gorgeous grounds of Forde Abbey and Gardens are half an hour away. For a side order of legend and myth as you meander, take a tour of Glastonbury Tor (25 minutes), said to have links with King Arthur and the Holy Grail. There’s more stunning natural scenery to be seen on a visit to Cheddar Gorge (50 minutes) or by delving into the showcaves at Wookey Hole (40 minutes). Meanwhile, those with other interests may like to take flight to Fleet Air Arm Museum (10 minutes), meet the menagerie at Ferne Animal Sanctuary (half an hour) or pack their bucket and spade for a day spent on the sands of Weymouth (45 minutes).
