  • Dog-friendly wild-camping site on Dorset’s Portland Peninsula
  • Weymouth 20 minutes’ drive; West Dorset Heritage Coast 25 minutes
  • Direct access to coastal path; sea views; pub within walking distance
Anyone on the hunt for a back-to-basics adventure in a fairly remote coastal location ought to put Hallett’s at Portland Bill right at the top of their list of potential destinations. This family-run site sits close to the southern tip of Dorset’s Portland Peninsula, less than a five-minute drive (or a 20-minute walk) from the Portland Bill promontory and its red-and-white striped lighthouse. Drive right up to your pitch, on a green field with spectacular sea views, and prepare to embrace island life. Most things are within walking distance here, starting with the sheltered pebbly beach at Church Ope Cove (25 minutes along the clifftops of the South West Coast Path, to which there is direct access). Of course, this is a popular area for paddleboarding and kayaking, so if you’re lugging your watersports equipment around, you might prefer to drive (five minutes). Alternatively, you can head south/southwest, past the lighthouse and on to Pulpit Rock (25-minute walk), a man-made stack resembling a book leaning against a lectern, where you can catch some rather awesome sunsets, too. Back at the site, which accepts dogs as long as they’re kept on leads, guests can wind down and soak up the peaceful vibe, safe in the knowledge that the site has a ban on loud music and noisy groups. This is intended to be wild-style camping so facilities just stretch to portable toilets, but you are welcome to bring a barbecue. Provisions can be sourced at either Weston or Easton (five minutes’ drive to either), though with the nearest pub a mere five-minute walk away, you might just decide to have your meals cooked for you, instead.

What customers say

This basic, friendly campsite boasts stunning coastal views, ideal for walkers and those seeking a back-to-basics experience. Its prime location offers easy access to coastal paths and nearby amenities. While praised for its reasonable pricing and helpful owners, some guests noted issues with portaloos, including cleanliness and odour, and occasionally windy conditions. Some found pitches sloped.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The price, the location, the view

Disliked The neighbouring tent ⛺️ which set up camp next us a few hours after we settled had 5 dogs and 3 children, they were noisy and disrespectful of our own space, we felt our bit of privacy was completely violated by some uncivilised thugs. Sadly not a good experience and will not return as I realised we need a campsite which provides more space per pitch. A shame really as it wasn’t a busy day and there was plenty of space for them to camp elsewhere on site.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location, peaceful with good access to the bill and its amazing walks.

Disliked The portaloo toilets are a problem, the chemical flushes don’t always work, some campers don’t clear up their own mess and they are not sanitised properly. The entrance to the site, has a steep turn and damaged concrete drive making it tricky for larger camper vans or motor homes to get in and out. The site signage at the entrance makes it difficult to see traffic coming from the left.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location right by the sea and walking distance from the lighthouse, old quarry etc is fantastic.

Small site so can't get overly busy, easy to get to, quite easy to get into and park (though the access is quite steep).

Friendly and chilled out.

Disliked Facilities are extremely basic. This was expected but nevertheless - it's not a highlight. Running water is one tap for the site, no washing up facilities, portaloos only which are as to be expected (pretty grim). Also, no general waste bins, just food waste.

Pitches are pretty small (4 X 9 ish) including parking so you might need to get creative and hope your neighbours haven't got a big tent either.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback back, yes the pitch are 9x4. But we only advertise our pitch as 3x3 for tent.
And 3x5 for vans. Which you know when you booked our site. So when are pitchs are 9x4 it's more than adequate.
There is a general rubbish, but we want to recycle as must as possible that's why there is recycling for both metal, cardboard and plastic.
Also we don't offer washing up facilities so why would you expect it ?
Like we tell anyone who asked we are limited on what we can provide due to us being in a natural beauty area full of restrictions.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Views to die for. Very relaxed site.

Disliked The port a loos were smelly. The flaps didn't cover the hole properly. Not the site owners fault though. People did seem to keep them clean though.

Local attractions

The sandy beach at Weymouth (20 minutes’ drive) is the place for traditional seaside fun, including pedalos, miniature golf and donkey rides. At the entrance to the harbour is Nothe Fort, a 19th-century defensive structure with underground corridors and a museum, plus views of the Jurassic Coast. The West Dorset Heritage Coast (25 minutes) includes Chesil Beach, a 17-mile stretch of pebbles protecting the Fleet Lagoon, where you might be able to spot migrant birds, in addition to the elegant winged residents of Abbotsbury Swannery. Meanwhile, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are known for their colourful magnolia blossoms. For birds of the raptor kind, head to Dorset Falconry Park (40 minutes), where you can meet and handle gentle owls, fly a hawk to the glove or just sit and relax as you take in the bird of prey displays.
