  • Well-located adults-only Dorset touring park near the A35
  • Poole Quay, Corfe Castle and Monkey World within 20 minutes’ drive
  • Dogs welcome; Lytchett Matravers pubs and shops a mile away
Have a look at this for a conveniently located place to stay in the Dorset countryside – Huntick Retreat is only a little way off the A35, the main road running across the county, and it’s a mere mile from the shops and pubs of Lytchett Matravers. Not that it’s all about the location, handy though it is… this is a site that’s surrounded by lovely views and offers a warm welcome and helpful service to all its guests. It’s an adults-only (16+) setup here, but dogs are welcome and provided with a designated exercise area for a proper stretch of the paws. There are plenty of dog-friendly pubs and attractions nearby too, so they’ll be able to join you on your outings – just ask on site for tips. Dogs will need to be kept on a lead at all times on site, however, because it’s not just human guests that like to pitch up here – the park is also popular with passing wildlife like deer – including a resident stag – badgers, buzzards and hedgehogs, so the owners are keen to make sure they’re not disturbed. Facilities at Huntick Retreat have been well thought out to make life easy for guests – you’ll have access to a launderette and drying room, a washing-up area, a wifi connection, chemical disposal and bathrooms with toilets and showers. Poole (15 minutes’ drive) is your nearest large town for anything you can’t get in Lytchett Matravers.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly welcome from reception

Disliked Pitch size very snug for a 8m motorhome, grass pitches beside VERY VERY VERY muddy.
Toilets/ showers basic but usable

From the manager: Thank you for your review.

We’re sorry your stay didn’t meet your expectations. I noticed your motorhome was 8 meters long; our booking terms state that units over 7.9 meters aren’t allowed, as our pitches can’t accommodate larger vehicles.

The grass on-site has been affected by the heavy rain in January and February, which explains the muddy conditions. Regards, Huntick Retreat.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked I was only using the site for a stop over, the pitch was perfect, a quiet site with lovely countryside views. I had a fully serviced pitch so had, electric hook up, water point and waste disposal. The camp WiFi worked well, the toilet / shower blocks were clean and well looked after.

Disliked Nothing to dislike I will use this site again on our travels.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Spacious pitches ,and a nice setting ,deer in the field.

Disliked Looked a bit rundown to be honest,no real borders to the pitches ,could do with more scalpings put on pitches, very muddy but the weather has been bad ,but it looked generally run down.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Could do with a bit of a revamp and better thought out areas.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly staff, hot shower

Disliked Poor lighting, muddy, small hard standings, so walking on muddy grass to get into the van. Dodgy hot water in the dishwashing room. Generally feels a bit run down and dated. Laundry area gets locked up when reception is not on, so couldn’t do any washing.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are genuinely sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations.

Firstly, we sincerely apologise for the muddy conditions on site. Unfortunately, Dorset has experienced persistent daily downpours and flooding since December. While the weather is beyond our control, we fully appreciate the inconvenience this may have caused. The excessive groundwater has affected our pitches, and we have scheduled necessary repairs as soon as conditions allow and the weather improves.

Regarding the laundry facilities, the opening hours are the same as the reception office hours. These times are clearly displayed in reception for guests’ reference.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Easy to find and check in. Very quite. The owner said we could let the dog run in the camping field as not in use this time of year which was great. Shower block and Toilets warm and clean.

Disliked Small moan, hard standing very muddy could have done with more chippings. But the weather has been against them.

Local attractions

Dorset is, of course, well known for its gorgeous landscapes – and it should be pretty easy to check out some of the top spots from here. Both the atmospheric ruins of Corfe Castle and the sparkling waters of the Blue Pool are about 20 minutes’ drive away; alternatively you could set off to the Jurassic Coast for a day at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door (half an hour), or head for the miles of sandy beach at Studland Peninsula (half an hour). If you fancy a bit of activity among this scenery, perhaps play a round at Bulbury Woods Golf Club (five minutes) or have a go at the madcap floating assault course at Dorset Adventure Park (20 minutes). For more leisurely strolls, board a boat at Poole Quay (15 minutes) for a wildlife trail around Brownsea Island, wander around the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy estate (15 minutes) or set off to see birds at Abbotsbury Swannery (45 minutes). Don’t write off Dorset’s favourite family attractions either – places like Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes), The Tank Museum (25 minutes) and the Swanage Railway (half an hour) have plenty to offer for grown-up days out.
