  • Well-maintained park half a mile from the coast
  • Lots of open space and fishing lakes on site
  • Café, indoor pool, tennis court and a licensed shop
You don’t get to your 51st birthday as a campsite without doing something very right. And the cheerful and dedicated team at Wood Farm Holiday Park near Charmouth in Dorset have had things sorted since 1972: pristine facilities and well-kept grounds, fishing lakes on site stuffed with stock and lots of open space... The rural setting is pitch-perfect too, among mature trees and in the Char Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, under a mile from Charmouth and the Jurassic Coast. There’s plenty of wildlife to watch, especially around the fishing lakes: rabbits bound about and you can also spot red deer at times. For tasty fodder, the Offshore Café has takeaway on offer (send the kids to clamber on the shipwreck structure a few metres away until the food arrives). The café overlooks the Offshore indoor pool, which is available to all guests for a small charge; you can buy discount tickets at reception and the pool is free for under-fives. For other activities, there’s a tennis court on site as well as a giant draughts board to puzzle over, and once you’re ready to explore Dorset, the Wood Farm tourist information room has loads of leaflets on things to do and see in the area. There’s also a licensed park shop selling groceries as well as the daily papers, camping essentials and gas. Dogs are allowed on site.

What customers say

This campsite boasts stunning views and a great location, close to beaches and local amenities. Visitors frequently praise the friendly and helpful staff, and the cleanliness of the pods and facilities. The on-site swimming pool is a popular attraction for families. While most reviews are positive, some guests noted minor issues with the cleanliness and maintenance of shower blocks, and occasional noise from the nearby main road.

Camping pod

Liked Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Nice, clean, secured and well maintained swimming pool with clean hot (30°C) water. Clean toilets and showers with hot water. Perfectly located with walking distance from Charmouth town centre and less then 10 min drive from beautiful Lyme Regis.

Disliked Cafe should have a choice of locally brewed beers and ciders rather than common types like birra morretti but it's not really a dislike. It's more likely polite suggestion.

Liked Hi! We wanted to compliment the park and staff on their friendliness and helpfulness. We were welcomed in a most friendly fashion and had such professional and courteous interactions with restaurant, pool, reception and maintenance staff. I'd like to acknowledge the gentleman with the impressive mullet and heavy-metal tattoos. I never got his name but he was so friendly and kind to my kids, it will be a lasting memory!

Disliked If there was a communal braai/bbq area, that would have pushed my experience over the top!

Camping pod

Liked We loved our stay at Wood Farm! The camping pod was perfect for our needs.
It had a double bed, bunk bed, table and chairs, a small storage unit and a small clothes drying rack. The bedside lights were a brilliant touch and there were plenty of electric points for charging phones etc.

We also loved the fact they have two fenced in dog walking fields (although we only used one) it was perfect for our dog to stretch his legs and have a good sniff round.

The toilet/shower block was clean with plenty of toilets and showers/toothbrushing sinks so there were no queues at any point and plenty of toilet paper throughout the day. I was surprised there was only one hand washing sink with soap dispenser though, but it wasn't a problem during our stay.

The camping pod areas are at the top of the site right near the little shop, which is handy, although we didn't need to use it. The other facilities are at the bottom of a VERY steep hill but there is parking at the bottom of you have any elderly or disabled members in your group.

I can't comment on the facilities like the pool/play area etc as we didn't use them. The site is very close to Lyme Regis and on the doorstep of Charmouth etc so we were on the beaches most of the time.
There were plenty of dog friendly areas on the beaches even in august so that was fantastic for us.

I've seen a few other reviews about the WiFi being expensive. It is a little pricey, however you can have upto 6 devices connected for the price you pay. The site had very good network coverage though, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Overall we had a fantastic stay and would definitely book Wood Farm again.

Disliked There was only one complaint we had about our stay and that was the cafe. You expect it to be a little pricey as it's an on-site convenience however, it is absolutely extortionate for the portion size you receive.

We ordered two bacon rolls which were each about the size of a McDonald's cheese burger with thin, cheap bacon and were £5.25 which is disgusting now I think of it. Especially when Charmouth has a bakery doing decent size rolls with several slices of thick tasty bacon for much less!
We also had a 'full english' which was tiny for the £8.95 they charge.

Also avoid the milkshakes which had a very weird consistency and tasted very artificial.

Camping pod

Liked The pod was very nice and and check in was pretty good there was a lovely pool the kids enjoyed swimming in it
The grounds were nice and tidy
And the staff very helpful the shower block was good and not to far from our pod the hill was a bit of a killer
Over all I would stay again

Disliked It’s a shame that the pods were set close to the road and some nights the traffic noise was quite loud
The pod was nice but there are subtle signs of ware and tear the door didn’t always shut properly but they knew this and did try and rectify this
The showers are good but again they are showing signs is ware and need a bit of a deep clean and spruce up
It’s a shame the pool isn’t open a little longer as it would be nice if folks could have a swim later in the day
The onsite shop is helpful but very expensive

Liked Reception staff.
Restaurant staff on pizza night.

Disliked Distance / hill climb to showers/ toilets from pods.

Liked The location the simplicity of the pod , nice to step off grid ! No tv and beautiful views.

Disliked Showers limescaled up and had to keep presssing the button to keep the water flowing. Made showering harder than it had to be .
The cafe prices were extortionate !!
£38 for fish and chips x2 with a soft drink 😔

Camping pod

Liked The pod was warm and cosy. Clean and tidy on arrival. Good for us with one child and a dog.
Swimming pool was lovely, perfect for our stay, we used it twice. Easy to book and get in to. Sauna was a bonus too.
Dog walk was ideal, safe and secure. Peaceful and picturesque.
Shop was well stocked, friendly / helpful staff.
The park itself has good amenities, lovely planting and well maintained. Beautiful natural surroundings.

Disliked Taps in the toilets / shower block as they run a lot - find this a bit wasteful for the planet.
Could you have recycled toilet paper?

Camping pod

Liked We stayed in a pod, great views of the park and country side.
The pod was as described, basic but comfortable, great outside space for alfresco living. Pool and tennis courts on site was a bonus. Sourdough pizza from the cafe was amazing.

Disliked My only grumble is the showers needed to be cleaned more often, towards the end of the day they were looking grubby.

Local attractions

The beaches at Charmouth and ‘the pearl of Dorset’ Lyme Regis are both within walking distance. Both are known for rich fossil-hunting pickings and have historic towns to browse around – Lyme Regis is famous for its Cobb Harbour and Jane Austen associations, while Charmouth has a Heritage Coast Centre to help you out with your fossil finds. Charmouth is one of the gateway towns to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, with coastal walks, climbing, watersports and fishing all abounding along its 93-mile stretch. The ‘anchor towns’ of Exeter, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch are all accessible from this section of coast: kids can splash about at the Splashdown Water Park in Poole, walk under water in the tunnel at Bournemouth Oceanarium or get crafty at the ‘yummy mummy centre’ Zooma in Christchurch. For wildlife watching, take a trip on the Seaton open air tramway along the Axe estuary to see flocks of wading birds at the area’s nature reserves, or go to one of the many wildlife centres and attractions about; you could peer at the meerkats in the Axe Valley Wildlife Park, or see the seals among the thousand animals at Weymouth Sealife Park. Wildlife of an ancient bent can be scoped at Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum. A Jurassic-sized amount of historical attractions is in Dorset and neighbouring Devon too, such as medieval Forde Abbey, the grottoes and gardens at Mapperton Abbey, the National Trust’s Shute Barton and the exotic Japanese gardens and Egyptian artefacts at Kingston Lacy House and Gardens.
