Lodge exterior

  • Modern lodges on the fringes of Exmoor National Park, North Devon
  • Newberry Beach 15 minutes’ drive; Barnstaple and Ilfracombe 20 minutes
  • Organised activities such as horse riding and archery; indoor pool
On the western edge of Exmoor National Park and a 15-minute drive from the splendid North Devon National Landscape coastline, Calvert Devon Lodges is an excellent option for those looking to squeeze every drop out of an active holiday in North Devon. Exmoor has hiking and mountain-biking trails for all abilities, while watersports and wild swimming await at small sheltered coves like Newberry Beach and Wild Pear Beach. As well as families and groups of friends, Calvert Devon might appeal to schools and community associations. This is because it is a gold-standard outdoor adventure centre, organising activities such as climbing, horse riding and archery. Experienced instructors are available to guide you through the basics or to help you improve if you’re already a dab hand. There’s an indoor pool (advance booking is recommended), and you’re also a five-minute walk from Wistlandpound Reservoir, where you can angle for trout, do a little birdwatching or just walk with your dog (a welcome guest at both Calvert Devon and Wistlandpound) along the forested paths. Accommodation is in modern lodges with a combination of bunk and single beds (all bedding is included), plus a private toilet and shower. With prior booking, it’s possible to eat at the on-site restaurant; alternatively, guests can self-cater with camping stoves or (better yet…) sample the home-cooked food in local pubs, of which there are a handful within a 15-minute drive. More dining establishments line the central streets of Ilfracombe and Barnstaple (20 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Among the activities at Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre (five minutes’ drive) are meet-and-greet sessions with meerkats and capybaras, and the so-called carnivore experience, where you might get to feed cheetahs and dingoes. Attractions around Lynmouth (15 minutes) include the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, a steep funicular built in 1890 and still going strong, and the Valley of Rocks, a rugged coastal area populated by wild goats. Just inland is National Trust - Watersmeet, an estate with a vast stretch of ancient woodland. When in Ilfracombe (20 minutes), check out the sheltered harbour, overlooked by the small Chapel of St Nicholas (dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540 and now a lighthouse). Book a ferry to Lundy Island, home to colonies of puffins, or head west along the coastline to the Tunnels Beaches, which can be reached via a series of tunnels carved in Victorian times.
