You can’t get much more exclusive than Southcott Glamping and Retreat near Bideford in Devon, where you have sole use of the glampsite. Arrive and your pre-erected bell tent, nattily kitted out and cosy thanks to the woodburner, is all ready and waiting for you to settle in.
What to expect? A full-size double bed in the tent with quality bedding and various pull-out bed options for the kids. Plenty of storage, so you can stow clothes away, and bedside tables for necessities like lamps and books.
You can keep your eco-footprint to a minimum in the solar-powered shower, and the washing-up area comes with a gas burner and traditional whistle kettle – the site owners throw in some tea, coffee, sugar and local milk so you can have a cuppa when you arrive. Breakfast hampers full of local treats can be ordered ahead of time, for an extra charge.
It’s just a 15-minute walk to a smashing village pub serving home-cooked meals – it’s also got a beer garden for sunny days and a play area for the kids. The North Devon coast turns up plenty of seafront pubs, Blue Flag beaches and hiking or cycling routes like the Tarka Trail (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
Surfers can have a field day here, with spectacular beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe (both 40 minutes’ drive) and Saunton Sands (30 minutes). Haven’t brought your board? No problem, you can hire them at all these beaches and if you need to up your skills set, book a lesson too. Top-notch spots for body boarding and rock-pooling adventures include Putsborough (40 minutes) and tiny Barricane (45 minutes) beaches.
If you can drag the children away from the beach, head off any moans with a trip to The BIG Sheep (10 minutes) for animal encounters and sheep racing. The Milky Way Adventure Park (20 minutes) has plenty of interactive family fun in the Ninja Stars games arena as well as dodgem cars and rollercoasters.
Backing North Devon’s glorious beaches are some cracking towns too. Pretty, cliffside Clovelly (25 minutes) offers artisan crafts in the visitor centre and a cute fishing harbour, while Ilfracombe (40 minutes) has a romantic marina to wander around, plenty of pasty shops and a small aquarium.
