The Godrey Heritage Coast, a nature reserve with towering cliffs, golden sands and seal-watching opportunities, can be accessed by car, bike or on foot from Portreath. Linger in this pleasant town for fish and chips, a seaside pint or to try your hand at surfing (gear hire and lessons are available at the beach). These parts are a hub for outdoor wanderers of all kinds. The Mineral Tramways trail, a traffic-free network of paths that goes deep in Cornwall's historic mining region, is close 'by (five minutes' drive). The hardiest hikers can tackle a stretch the long-distance South West Coast Path; head for Tehidy for the Tehidy Deadman's Cove Circular Walk for a more easy-going jaunt (10 minutes). Stick around here for the historic manor and park. Further afield, Perranporth (20 minutes) has a golf course, miniature golf, top surf schools and a seawater lido for active times. Meanwhile, artsy St Ives (25 minutes) draws painters from far and wide, being home to galleries including Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Fab Falmouth (30 miles) is likely to please all the family, whether you're drawn by Pendennis Castle, the maritime museum or the beach and rookpools at Gyllyngvase.
