  • Peaceful park 25 minutes' walk from Mawgan Porth beach
  • A 20-minute drive from Newquay and Trevose Headland
  • Playground, library and table tennis, plus spectacular scenery
It may be just a 20-minute drive from Newquay, but it's lovely and peaceful at Sun Haven Valley Holiday Park in Cornwall. This is a place to get away from the crowds: it's tucked among the trees and bordered by a stream, and there’s no pub, club or evening entertainment. As a matter of fact, there's a strict no-noise policy that applies after 10.30 pm. What else is there to look forward to? There's the scenery, for one. For two, it's a 25-minute saunter down a shady woodland path to the stunning Mawgan Porth beach. Third, the facilities are excellent, with thoughtful touches such as a good playground for kids, a library and table tennis. If you take a stroll along the trout stream, keep your eyes peeled for otters, herons and kingfishers. As for the location, Sun Haven Valley Holiday Park is handily within walking distance of Mawgan Porth's shops and restaurants. Camel Creek Family Adventure Park, Newquay and the National Trust's Trevose Headland are all within a 20-minute drive of the site for family days out, scenic walks or beach time.

Route directions

The last half a mile to the site is a Cornish lane with 'cornish hedges' (six-foot stone walls covered with turf) it is effectively a single-way road with passing places. A local bus company travels down it hourly (usually a single-decker, but once per day, a double-decker). The site is on the left-hand side of the road, with a double-width entrance. Reception is just inside the gate on the left.

Local attractions

Aside from its acres of golden sand, rock pools and caves, Mawgan Porth has a café, supermarket and pub, as well as a small surf school, crazy golf and pitch and putt (more serious golfers will find an 18-hole golf course only a mile away). It goes without saying that there is great walking in the area, not least along the South West Coast Path, and Sun Haven’s friendly owners will happily supply guests with suggested routes for all abilities. Anglers can fish for carp, tench and bream in the lakes next door to the park, or try and net a trout from the brook; there are plenty of other well-stocked lakes in the area, and regular sea-fishing trips depart from the likes of Padstow and Newquay. Both these towns can be reached in about 15 minutes by car (or hop on a bus outside the park gates) and offer a wealth of things to see and do.
