Siblyback Lake Campsite

8.4

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • With kayaking, canoeing, high ropes, trout fishing and cycling
  • Short drive to Liskeard and to the smugglers' site of Jamaica Inn
  • Play areas, boat hire, cycle path and Lakeside café serving cream teas

Bordered by the tors and moors of Bodmin, the roomy lakeside site at Siblyback Lake Country Park has a good range of water- and land-based activities for all ages and abilities.

Visitors can hire out sailboards, rowing boats, kayaks and sailing dinghies (or bring their own); friendly instructors are on site for tuition if needed. The site also has windsurfing kit and sailing dinghies for hire for the experienced, and you can launch your own craft at a small cost (please note you'll need insurance). Around the water, this is excellent birdwatching and walking territory; a pretty three-mile cycle path (fully accessible to wheelchair users) snakes around the lake to make the best of the spectacular views, and there's a high ropes course for kids (open at set session times), along with two play areas.

For fisherfolk, the lake is teeming with trout and is a Trout Master fishery, which means that if you catch a whopper it’ll be entered into the eponymous nationwide competition. Even if you don’t net the big one, you should still manage a decent catch: recent years have seen rod averages of three fish per angler. Fishing permits (available on site; fly fishing only) are required for everyone over 12 years of age.

Also on site is a lakeside café serving snacks, light meals and the understandably ubiquitous Cornish cream tea.

Excellent site, everything you need, lovely location, great café.27/09/2021

Lovely location, great for us with two dogs, dogs on leads around lake and not allowed in the water, but a great little dog walking field close by, where they could be let off to run round.

A great lake for paddle boarding or kayaking. Nice and quiet when we arrived late Friday afternoon. Busy at the lake over the weekend, dog walkers and visitors, but after 5pm you pretty much have the lake to yourself. 3miles track around the lake, great for walking and running, various other walks near by.

If using the lake between 09:00 and 17:00 there are launch fees and you need insurance.

Exceptional café on site, thoroughly recommend, great staff, great food, perfect addition. Will come back again.

Don't expect to get a very good phone signal, but that's nice for a weekend getaway, you can get signal in a couple of spots near café and dam, but otherwise very little.

The location is stunning. Lots of activities to undertake if you wish or you can simply sit back, relax and watch the world go by. The lake walk is nice and level with plenty to see along the way. Wheelchair and scooter friendly. All in all we can not fault the location.

    Staff were friendly.

    Disliked:

The hardstanding pitches are very narrow. Definitely not suitable if you wanted to put an awning up. They are also not hardstanding as we know them, more like compacted grass pitches with stones underneath. However, for a weekend stay it was sufficient for us.

The facilities were not cleaned the whole weekend, which considering they are used by anyone who attends for the day to use the lake facilities was not great. The shower blocks were filthy and there was nowhere within the shower to hang your clothes or wash stuff and quite frankly using the floor was not an option considering it was covered in grass and mud!

The pot wash area was only cleaned by us, which I don't have a problem with so long as all campers do the same! When you leave a sink clean and then return to see if full of food waste it is not very pleasant.

There was no signage to the fresh water or the waste bins. We eventually found them. Unless you have a really long hose you will not be able to fill your motorhome tank direct from the tap. There was no dedicated area to empty your waste water. We were told to drive to the top of the car park and empty it onto the tarmac!

Very quiet (we were the sole campers) and HEATED TOILET BLOCK so could dry socks and boots overnight. Hot water for washing up.

    Disliked:

No-one available in case of any problem, but we didn't have any so it didn't matter. A bit out of the way if on foot, as we were, because of predominance of private land.

The view of the lake, the walk around the lake and the dog exercise area, toilets and showers were very clean and plenty of hot water, it was a very quiet place of an evening as most people were day trippers using the water sports facilities.

    Disliked:

The road approaching the lake is extremely narrow and not for the faint hearted especially with a motorhome, very glad we had our car too as that made life very easy getting in and out of the site daily, no laundry facilities - with kids even on holidays we need to keep up with washing clothes.

The pitch was great, lots of space and the views were stunning especially at sunset. We had so much fun on the lake, easy to launch kayaks, SUP and the staff were really friendly and helpful.
My friends ate in the cafe and said how delicious the burritos and cakes were. All round a great trip and we will be back!

    Disliked:

Showers kept running hot and cold and the midgies are a nightmare at sunset which is to be expected, so take bug repellent or a fire pit and burn wood on an evening to keep them at bay.

Local attractions

Nearby Bodmin is the highest and most sparsely populated area of Cornwall, a land of myth and mystery. Close to Siblyback are Dozmary Pool, alleged to be the final resting place of King Arthur’s Excalibur, and the moody Hurlers, three stone circles reputedly formed when a group of men who dared to play games on the Sabbath Day were turned to stone.

Other potential trips include a tour of the global greenery under the massive domes of the Eden Project, which lays on special activities for kids in the summer holidays, including circus skills, den building and water play, and a venture to the highest pub in Cornwall in the neighbouring village of Minions.

Also visit the seaside resort of Looe, two towns in one linked by a bridge over an inlet where you can watch the fishing boats bring in their catch, or the fishing village of Polperro, where cars are banned from the narrow streets.

As well as the many great beaches nearby, kids will no doubt enjoy a day at Crealy Adventure Park meeting the animals, scrambling around the play areas, and being spun around and splashed about on the rides.
