  • Shepherd’s hut in a woodland clearing five minutes’ drive from Bodmin
  • Helman Tor hikes 10 minutes’ drive; Newquay half an hour
  • Separate kitchen and bathroom huts; firepit and deckchairs
The name of this site tells you a lot about its location: Bluebell Woods is indeed deep into a peaceful patch of Cornish woodland, surrounded by luxuriant nature and feeling blissfully remote. Yet it is also easy to access, sitting just off the B3268 road that leads into Bodmin (five minutes’ drive). And that’s not all: the trails of Cardinham Woods are 10 minutes’ drive away, beaches such as St Austell Bay and Booley 20 minutes, and a 25-minute drive takes you right into the heart of Bodmin Moor. Talk about good connections. In a forest clearing stand a purpose-built shepherd’s hut (with a kingsize bed, a woodburner and a TV) and two separate outbuildings. These house the bathroom (with a shower) and the kitchen, which comes with a sink, fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster (and assorted utensils), plus a cosy dining area right by the window (cue pretty forest views). Also in the clearing are a firepit and a couple of deckchairs where you can relax after a meal, letting the sounds of the woods lull you into a wee siesta. For those who think that resting is overrated, there are plenty of ways to keep active here, starting with the off-road cycle trails at Lanhydrock (five minutes; and you can hire a bike there) and continuing with a hike up Helman Tor (10 minutes). Climbing to the top of this granite hill rewards with views of both the north and the south coast of Cornwall, and there might be en-route sightings of cuckoos, yellowhammers and butterflies.

Local attractions

In addition to hills scattered with mining remains, Bodmin Moor (25 minutes’ drive) has the Colliford reservoir, with trout fishing, picnic areas and birdwatching, plus surrounding moorland walks. There are also several stone circles (Stannon and Trippet, for example), plus the Cheesewring, a monumental rock formation. At the Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour), a deep valley with its own microclimate is home to the Jungle, a tropical garden with palm, banana and other exotic trees, plus a bamboo forest. Another area of the gardens, the Pleasure Grounds, displays a colourful collection of camellias and rhododendrons. Head to Newquay (half an hour), on the north coast of Cornwall, for surfing beaches (if you’re a beginner, there’s a surf school on Fistral Beach) or to join a marine safari looking for dolphins and seals. Choppy seas don’t allow boat trips? You can still get your quota of sea creatures at the Blue Reef Aquarium.
