  • Family-friendly site next to a 150-acre farm park
  • A 20-minute drive from central Leeds; 45 minutes from York
  • Café, food shop, kids' farm, play area and wifi
Fancy a family holiday where the activities are within ridiculously easy reach? Head to the pitches at Swithens Farm, next door to a 150-acre adventure farm near Leeds, for easy access to a farm park full of friendly critters (including farm animals and a few more exotic ones like alpacas and meerkats). This countrified West Yorkshire site may be full of farmyard sights and sounds, but it's also well-connected – it's a 20-minute drive from here into central Leeds, and both the M1 and M62 are a few minutes' drive away. This location makes planning many a fab day out splendidly straightforward (including jaunts further afield to York or the Yorkshire Dales). There's plenty to explore by the site though if you're not up for venturing far – the farm park next door (separate charge for entry) has a soft play area and a kids' farm (often the scene of cooing grownups too), plus a café that serves up cooked breakfasts and lighter bites. You may also like to contemplate meals cooked on a barbecue back at your pitch: bring your grill along and you can pick up fresh meat from the farm's butchery for a winning dinner. In terms of facilities, this site is a little lower on frills: no showers are available, but there's a portable toilet in the pitching field and guests can use the café toilets during opening hours. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you on hols here (but please keep them on a lead to curb that pesky herding instinct).

Local attractions

Leeds and its suburbs are packed with family-friendly activities: head to the Royal Armouries Museum (20 minutes' drive) for a swashbuckling display of arms and armour from across the world or drive out of town to Harewood House (35 minutes) if you fancy touring a rather regal country estate. York (45 minutes) has plenty of further kid-pleasing adventures in store, including the interactive Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum. Looking for some outdoor adventure? Prep a picnic and drive up to Low Laithe (about an hour), where you can hire bikes and explore Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can also pedal a couple of miles further down the road and visit the weird and wacky geological formations at Brimham Rocks. For active pursuits a little closer to base, check out Temple Newsam Park (20 minutes), where there's a Go Ape and golf course. Want to get seriously in shape while sojourning at Swithens Farm? A local leisure centre and gym can be reached with a five-minute drive.
