  • Family-friendly, peaceful site near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
  • Half an hour’s drive from Gibson Mill and Haworth
  • Direct access to the Pennine Way; other footpaths nearby
Fancy a spot of almost-wild camping on a working family farm in the South Pennines? You’re looking at the right place then, as Ridge Fold Camping is a pop-up campsite surrounded by farm animals and with wonderful scenery on the edge of the Brontë moors. The area is well known for its birds, wildlife and spectacular scenery, with miles of footpaths – including the Pennine Way – to explore, making it the perfect location for walking or mountain biking. Or you can simply kick back amid the wonderful views and enjoy a leisurely break surrounded by nature. Hike up to Hardcastle Crags, 20 minutes’ drive away, or up the activity levels with a moorland yomp to Top Withens (90 minutes’ walk away) to see the inspiration for Emily Brontë’s famous novel ‘Wuthering Heights’. On-site facilities include a ladies and gents’ toilet block, a shower shack and a cold-water bowser for drinking water. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, but due to the livestock on site, canine chums need to be on a lead at all times.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its stunning, secluded rural location with panoramic views and proximity to walking trails. Visitors frequently highlight the exceptional cleanliness of the facilities, including spotless toilets and showers, and appreciate the friendly, accommodating owners who often go the extra mile. Pitches are generally spacious and level. While some mention minimal facilities and the site's exposed, windy nature, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return. The adjacent pub is also a popular amenity.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Very clean toilets and shower.
Onsite fire pits, fire starter and logs for hire £15; only £10 for fire starter and logs after. Seems like a fair sum to support local businesses (co-op in Hebden bridge was selling for £10.50).
The owner, Jane, was really lovely.
Large field with cows dropping by for a visit by the fence. Nice views.
Only 12-15 mins drive to Hebden Bridge although the roads are narrow and onky fits one car at a time.

Disliked Not a dislike but there was only one shower onsite so something to be wary of if it gets busy although we didn’t have any issues with queuing or waiting.
The drinking water supply was from a bowser which we didn’t use as we brought drinking water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Small and friendly campsite.
Basic facilities (toilets and one shower) but very clean and well stocked.
The views are amazing and there are animals all around which is lovely.
The owner Jane is a lovely, friendly lady and stopped to have a chat with everyone who was staying.
Fairly small do doesn't get too busy.
Loads of walking routes nearby and close to Hardcastle Crags.

Disliked Not really a dislike, just be aware that the site is quite exposed so be aware of changing weather. There is also a very limited phone signal.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Friendly owners. Great views! Clean toilets & showers, and hot water!
Good to have a wash-up area too.

Disliked Field is a bit 'bumpy', with some holes deep enough to twist your ankles (which I nearly did a couple of times. Not a complaint or a dislike, just letting people be aware so as to take care if rushing about.

**Pub next door closed. Not Ridge Fold Camping's fault of course, but was a disappointment.

I can only apologise on behalf of the rabbits about the holes, the pesky little blighter’s, they are a pain🙈🥴
Take care
Kind regards Jane 😊

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The simplicity of the site, hot showers, clean toilets, nothing complicated including no phone signal or wifi. It allowed me to switch off from the world and focus on having time to myself. Be prepared for absolute basics, cook your own food (no pub near by) to entertain yourself and get back to basics (I recommend card games, reading a book, colouring book or download offline films). Great walking areas all around. The dams are lovely to walk around. The wildlife is lovely to see, especially the Lapwings.
Jane came around to say hello and made sure I had everything i needed, including a fire pit. It was lovely to have a chat with her and was happy for me to leave my car at the site when I went for a day's walk on the day of check out.

Disliked Would be nice for a facility to freeze ice blocks for people staying for more than a couple fo days.

Local attractions

Mix in some cultural time with a visit to Emily’s study at the Brontë Parsonage Museum (half an hour's drive) in Haworth, and take a tour of the Piece Hall (35 minutes), Halifax’s wonderfully restored Georgian-era cloth hall. You can learn all about West Yorkshire’s former textile industry at Gibson Mill (30 minutes), which produced cotton until 1890. Pick up souvenirs for the folks back home from Boundary Mill outlet store (20 minutes) in Colne, or potter around the indie shops in Skipton (40 minutes), which is also gateway to hikes in the Dales. The art deco Hebden Bridge Picture House (15 minutes) takes care of any rainy days with showings of feel-good films, while a nose around the famous May’s Shop (10 minutes) in Heptonstall is recommended – it’s been run by the same elderly lady for years and is a much-loved local institution.
