  • Friendly site between the North Yorkshire Moors and Howardian Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Helmsley and 25 minutes from Malton
  • Small shop on site and a pub 20 minutes’ walk away; dog-friendly
Moors, hills or market towns? Nab yourself a spot within reach of all three at Wombleton Caravan Park, which is in a little nook of Ryedale between the North Yorkshire Moors and the Howardian Hills, 50 minutes’ drive away from the east coast. This is a very friendly place, personally run by the Willoughby family. Those merry vibes are continued over in the local pub, which is 20 minutes’ walk away, and serves wholesome and unpretentious pub food, wines, spirits, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Of course, it has some splendid Yorkshire ales too (of the likes of Black Sheep, Theakstons and John Smiths). The small site has generously-sized pitches, all with electric hook-up. Facilities are splendid too. There are wifi and recycling facilities. Make use of the ladies and gents toilets, which has two individual private cubicles (with their own hand basins), as well as an indoor washing-up room with hot water, power showers, hairdryers, a shaver and powerpoints for your own appliances. There’s also a modern, clean toilet block with an accessible family toilet. The small shop on site stocks all your general groceries, along with a few caravan accessories, gas and charcoal for the barbecues. Next door is a small lending library with informational brochures (open day and night, so no matter if you’re a morning person or night owl). Wombleton Village is well-situated just a few miles from a few gorgeous North Yorkshire market towns. So, flock to the weekly outdoor markets in Helmsley (10 minutes’ drive), between the valleys of Bilsdale and Ryedale. Thirsk (half an hour) and Kirkbymoorside (10 minutes) also have regular markets; Kirkbymoorside’s market is every Wednesday, with craft stalls, bread stalls and cheese, meat and fish vans, among other things.

What customers say

This is an exceptionally clean and well-maintained site with friendly and helpful staff. Visitors praise the immaculate facilities, peaceful atmosphere, and spacious pitches. The on-site fishing lake and dog walking areas are popular. While some found the route to the site challenging and noted a charge for showers and occasional WiFi issues, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many planning to return.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Booked this as it had the fishing lake on site. Arrived Friday lunchtime and were welcomed by the owners and quickly booked in.

Once booked in we were taken to our pitch and told where to pitch up and park. Nothing was a problem and information given was excellent.

We stopped for 2 nights, including a full day fishing with some nice F1 carp pulled out.

The site is immaculately kept by the owners and is nice and quiet site.

Facilities are very clean and hit showers are great.

Would definitely recommend a booking here and we will definitely be back.

Liked Great quiet site, immaculate facilities. Me and my 10 year old son stayed for three night. Good fishing and dog walking on the disused airfield. Great friendly owners. Will definitely be returning.

Electric gravel touring caravan pitch

Liked Amazingly quiet site, no children’s playground but that ment no “ferrel” children so peaceful when it came to putting the children to bed.
Site was really well kept, pitches flat , toilets clean, dogs on leads.

Disliked Route to get there. Caravans not allowed up Sutton Bank we found it impossible to follow sign posted route. Sat nav keeps trying to send you back to the A170.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked An absolutely beautiful and stunning site and exceptional owners.

Was greeted with a friendly welcome, and told which would be the best way to pitch to get the most sun and views, and what beautiful sun sets we were treated to.

Shower block always very clean even though the site was full, credit to the team.

And the fish and chip van was amazing.

We will definitely be returning.

Disliked Not really a dislike, but heard a couple of the seasonal moaning about the site being very busy and hemmed in. Also the site has strict guidelines on dogs on the site, about not allowing them to spry the bushes and trees. Most adhered to these, but a few thought it didn’t mean them.

Also saw a couple take the dogs into the female washroom.

But this will definitely not stop us returning to this wonderful site.

Local attractions

Take yourself to a historical site: Duncombe Park (15 minutes’ drive) is known as one of Yorkshire’s finest and in Helmsley (10 minutes), there’s a walled garden and the 900-year-old Helmsley Castle. Rievaulx Abbey (15 minutes) is a stunning ruin and museum, and the scenery is just as stunning, in a valley in the North York Moors. Where else might you flock to for stunning scenery? Yorkshire Lavender (20 minutes) is a clear contender, with a 60-acre lavender farm set across the Yorkshire hills. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (20 minutes) steam train will also send you through the North York Moors scenery at a pace. However, those historic sites are not yet over; this is Yorkshire, after all. Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a grand 18th-century home just 15 miles from historic York (45 minutes).
