  • Friendly site between the North Yorkshire Moors and Howardian Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Helmsley and 25 minutes from Malton
  • Small shop on site and a pub 20 minutes’ walk away; dog-friendly
Moors, hills or market towns? Nab yourself a spot within reach of all three at Wombleton Caravan Park, which is in a little nook of Ryedale between the North Yorkshire Moors and the Howardian Hills, 50 minutes’ drive away from the east coast. This is a very friendly place, personally run by the Willoughby family. Those merry vibes are continued over in the local pub, which is 20 minutes’ walk away, and serves wholesome and unpretentious pub food, wines, spirits, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Of course, it has some splendid Yorkshire ales too (of the likes of Black Sheep, Theakstons and John Smiths). The small site has generously-sized pitches, all with electric hook-up. Facilities are splendid too. There are wifi and recycling facilities. Make use of the ladies and gents toilets, which has two individual private cubicles (with their own hand basins), as well as an indoor washing-up room with hot water, power showers, hairdryers, a shaver and powerpoints for your own appliances. There’s also a modern, clean toilet block with an accessible family toilet. The small shop on site stocks all your general groceries, along with a few caravan accessories, gas and charcoal for the barbecues. Next door is a small lending library with informational brochures (open day and night, so no matter if you’re a morning person or night owl). Wombleton Village is well-situated just a few miles from a few gorgeous North Yorkshire market towns. So, flock to the weekly outdoor markets in Helmsley (10 minutes’ drive), between the valleys of Bilsdale and Ryedale. Thirsk (half an hour) and Kirkbymoorside (10 minutes) also have regular markets; Kirkbymoorside’s market is every Wednesday, with craft stalls, bread stalls and cheese, meat and fish vans, among other things.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very nice clean facilities. Friendly staff who are knowledgeable about the area. Quiet and peaceful! Well maintained grounds and a good area for dog walks offsite to keep the place clean. Coded entry gate also helps you feel secure on site.

Disliked Not really a dislike, but there is no park/play area on site. If you have kids that need that then you'll be disappointed, but board games and dvds were available to borrow to keep little ones entertained. Also remember to bring cash for the showers, as no cashpoint in the immediate facility and you need 20p for the showers. Again, not a dislike just handy advice.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The small size of the site. We camped and it was nice just having a small area. Everyone was really friendly, respectful and quiet. Definitely the quietest place we've been to by far. Shower block was clean and good standard. Staff always friendly and helpful. Would come back.

Electric grass touring caravan pitch

Liked This caravan site is absolutely amazing. Everything is spotless and the grass areas look like a cricket outfield. Adam clearly loves doing what he does and was always cheerful and pleasant, even unhitching our caravan, towing it to our pitch and leveling it out for us. The whole point of this trip was to introduce our visiting 7 year old twin grandsons to fishing and James (Adams brother) was an absolute legend when it came to this. He lent us a landing net, took us to the pond, and set up our rods (cheap and nasty ones but they worked, just) He explained everything in great detail and even left his tackle box in case we needed anything that we didn't already have. We caught 7 fair sized fish of various species, but who would have thought that 7 year olds are scared of flapping fish.

The toilets and washing areas are immaculate. Nowhere else have we seen an Elsan waste point area finished with stainless steel, and not just a hole in the ground with a concrete base.

We cannot say how much we enjoyed our short stay and will definitely be returning next summer. A lovely family run site.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked An excellent campsite, the owners are very pleasant and cannot do enough for you,the showers and toilets are spotlessly cleaned every day, this is a predominantly caravan site with a field area for camping which is flat with the grass mowed and picnic tables provided,we also had electric hook up. On site is a beautiful well laid out fishing pool well stocked and great value. Saturday night is fish and chips night with a van calling at the site best fish and chips we had for ages,a short distance from Helmsley and Pickering and easy to get to Scarborough and Robin Hoods bay,I would thoroughly recommend this campsite, thanks to James and Dan.

Local attractions

Take yourself to a historical site: Duncombe Park (15 minutes’ drive) is known as one of Yorkshire’s finest and in Helmsley (10 minutes), there’s a walled garden and the 900-year-old Helmsley Castle. Rievaulx Abbey (15 minutes) is a stunning ruin and museum, and the scenery is just as stunning, in a valley in the North York Moors. Where else might you flock to for stunning scenery? Yorkshire Lavender (20 minutes) is a clear contender, with a 60-acre lavender farm set across the Yorkshire hills. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (20 minutes) steam train will also send you through the North York Moors scenery at a pace. However, those historic sites are not yet over; this is Yorkshire, after all. Castle Howard (20 minutes) is a grand 18th-century home just 15 miles from historic York (45 minutes).
