Local attractions

A lively university town, Warwick stretches along the River Avon, on the banks of which rises a medieval castle first built by William the Conqueror. The castle grounds include the Peacock Garden and the Horrible Histories Maze. On the outskirts of town, Lammas Field is a sprawling green area circled by a racecourse. A National Trust property, Charlecote House (10 minutes’ drive) is a red-brick mansion with Tudor-era turrets and Victorian extensions. The interiors feature marble floors and busts, as well as family paintings; outside, sheep and deer graze in the Capability Brown-designed parkland. When visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, head first to the box office of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or the Swan Theatre to see if you can score tickets for the evening show (or better still, buy them online in advance). Then spend the day strolling through the town, looking for Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, and checking out the automata and mechanical art at the MAD Museum.
