  • Remote, off-grid pop-up site in the Shropshire Hills a mile from Clun
  • A 20-minute drive to Stokesay Castle or half an hour to Ludlow
  • Meet resident alpacas and goats and learn about creating yarn
Step away from the screen for a while and get set to soak up some stunning Shropshire scenery… it’s time to go off grid for a while at Jenny Knoll Farm Pop-up Campsite, where you’ll be encouraged to ignore your gadgets and embrace the fresh air and fabulous views of this remote setting. There’s no wifi at this location, so you might actually get round to opening that book you’ve been meaning to read for a while – but then again, you may also find there are still a fair few distractions here even without internet access. It might be the views across the surrounding Shropshire Hills National Landscape or the opportunity to walk through the woods and paddle through the streams. Perhaps you’ll look out for kites and buzzards flying overhead, or take a wander around the farm to meet the alpacas, goats and huge pig. Those alpacas and goats are more than mere residents of the place – this pop-up campsite is part of a fibre farm, so the animals provide the raw materials that owner Helen turns into gorgeous yarns. If you’re interested in finding out more, she will happily chat to you and show you how it all works. As a small pop-up site, the facilities here are fairly simple, but you’ll have access to compost toilets, warm showers and an area for cooking and eating – cook your dinner on a barbecue, then gather by the firepit to chat or have a singsong. This feels like a pretty remote location, but there are amenities (two pubs, two cafés and two shops) a mile away in Clun, with bigger Bishop’s Castle 15 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

This is a lovely base for some walks or cycle rides – but don’t forget that you’re in the Shropshire Hills, so there are lots of uphill challenges around. Trails start from right outside the farm, with others around Knighton, Hopton Woods and Bury Ditches (all 15 minutes’ drive) or further afield at Stiperstones or National Trust - Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (both 35 minutes). Seeking out a bit of history needn’t involve going far, either – start at the ruins of Clun Castle (five minutes) and Hopton Castle (15 minutes) before seeing the grander Stokesay Castle (20 minutes) or dropping in to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (20 minutes) to learn about the area’s past and present. Nearby Ludlow (half an hour) has a castle too, and it’s also built a reputation as a foodie destination, with lots of independent shops and eateries, a traditional market and a food festival. You may also fancy a tour of Kerry Vale Vineyard (25 minutes).
