The Mushroom Farm Campsite

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Off-grid site on a mushroom farm in rewilded Rutland countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Rutland Water, and 20 minutes to Belvoir Castle
  • Outdoor kitchen and wildlife watching on site; pub a 30-minute walk

Totally off-grid, The Mushroom Farm Campsite feels like a proper pioneering camp. Set on the edge of an 11-acre reserve (which you’re free to wander, by the way), it’s at the end of a little track from the farming village of Thistleton in rural Rutland.

Off-grid it may be, but nevertheless there are a few creature comforts on hand. Each spacious pitch has a canvas tent with a proper double mattress (bedding and towels included) plus camp beds for the kids (please bring a roll mat, sleeping bag and towels for any extra children).

Outside, there’s a spot for campfires, a cooking shelter, gas stove, kitchen utensils and crockery. Oh, and your very own private bucket shower, composting toilet and solar lights. Fresh water is provided in large water containers.

Guests are given a number code for the gate and an info pack in their tent. The hosts are available by phone and are a 10-minute drive away if you have any problems.

This is not a manicured site and you’ll be sharing it with wildlife – frequent visitors include songbirds, red kites, kestrels, owls, bats, lizards, frogs and toads, snakes, rabbits and hares, muntjac deer, mice, foxes, dragonflies, butterflies, moths and beetles…

The camp is set on a mushroom farm with the young trees and large areas left to rewild. This means flowering thistles and uneven ground so it may not be suitable for babies, very young children or people with health conditions.

Well what can I say other than great things about this campsite.. We booked it as a last minute 4 day getaway over the August Bank Holiday weekend and we are so glad we found and booked this wonderful gem of a site.

Prior to arriving at the campsite the area isn’t one we were familiar with but the surrounding area is simply beautiful countryside with quaint villages with thatched cottages, little village halls, lovely local shops, pretty much everything needed for a lovely break.

Once you get to the site there is just a padlock on a gate and you are in. No site offices to queue up in, nobody taking you to your pitch, just lovely coloured signs to follow and you are at your pitch. We stayed in a retro tent and it was spotlessly clean. The fire pit/bbq area is really well presented with little tree trunks to sit on which adds to the experience. The outdoor cooking station had everything you needed for a camping trip including pots, pans, utensils, crockery, in fact you name it they had it. The outdoor compost toilet and bucket shower again added to the whole camping experience and they provided 10, 10 litre containers containing fresh water and solar powered fairy lights looked lovely when the darkness fell.

We couldn’t recommend this site enough and to top it all off next year they hope to have an outdoor wild swimming pool which has already started being excavated and looks really impressive.

We also had the pleasure of meeting the site owners whilst we were there who are a lovely Mother and Daughter duo.

We will certainly stay here again and I urge anybody else please give it a go.
