  • Pop-up wild campsite edging the River Lee Navigation in Hertfordshire
  • A 15-minute walk to Rye House Kart Raceway and RSPB Rye Meads
  • Pitches in private woodland; bike rides and walks direct from the site
If you like the sound of having a wild camping break while helping to fund a very good cause, have a look at Ayurveda Hoddesdon, an off-grid, pop-up site and CIC-registered Social Enterprise. Set in a copse of hawthorn and weeping willow trees (literally), steps from the River Lee Navigation in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, the two-acre camping field is slowly being turned from wasteland into an outdoor space for the community. With a boundary fence in place for security and privacy, the tree-shaded pitches are on private land that has been carefully cleared by the owners, who are now growing vegetables on an allotment and experimenting with new, carbon-zero ideas on how to rejuvenate the soil and increase the site’s natural biodiversity. This peaceful site is a welcome – and handy – retreat for anyone wanting to escape the city bustle for a day or two’s walking quiet canal-side paths or cycling in the Lee Valley Regional Park. If you do want to get into London, there is also a direct route to London Liverpool Street from the train station 10 minutes' walk away. Hoddesdon town centre is also half an hour's walk away, and local activities include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, go-karting (just over the canal) or swimming at Glen Faba Lake (10 minutes' walk). By car, there are many scenic spots to visit within 30 minutes, including Ware, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Harlow (with a large shopping centre) and Enfield. All of these have delicious places to eat, or there are two local pubs within 20 minutes' walk of the site with restaurants and gardens. The site is totally off-grid, with no electricity, two compost loos and (non-drinking) water from a man-made well. However, there is a pop-up shop on site with basics such as firewood, bottled water and snacks in packets.

Local attractions

Happy to mess about by the water? There’s plenty to do around Ayurveda Hoddesdon: follow the River Lee Navigation from Fieldes Lock (five minutes) down to Lee Valley Boat Centre (50 minutes) and hire a pedalo for a potter down the canal, or watch the gaily painted barges coming through Brick Lock (55 minutes). A short stroll to Rye House Gatehouse should be worthwhile; it was once the home of Catherine Parr, wife of Henry VIII. Birdwatchers, head for RSPB Rye Meads Nature Reserve (15 minutes) to follow boardwalks among the reeds and (hopefully) spot kingfishers and snipe along the way. Budding botanists should amble along the River Stort to Hunsdon Mead Nature Reserve (an hour) for colourful displays of wild flowers in early summer. For something more active, head to the Lee Valley White Water Centre (20 minutes).

What customers say

This eco-friendly site, transformed from wasteland, is praised for its friendly and accommodating hosts, beautiful natural surroundings, and unique artistic touches. Guests appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, especially in the evenings, and the proximity to nature, a lake, and walking trails. While the site is noted as a work in progress, many enjoyed the 'off-grid' feel and dog-friendly environment. Potential visitors should be aware of train and occasional karting noise, and the off-site car park requiring a walk.
