  • Cosy adults-only cabins near Eyam in the Peak District National Park
  • Chatsworth, Bakewell and Curbar Edge all within 20 minutes' drive
  • Walk to Eyam in 20 minutes for the museum, tearooms, shop and pub
This is a top spot for a quiet couple’s break in the Peak District – the cabins at Top Riley Holiday Cottages are tucked away in a secluded woodland location and they’re available for adults only, so you’ll really be able to settle in for a peaceful stay here. About half a mile from the village of Eyam, this Derbyshire hideaway is very well placed for getting out to explore the fabulous surroundings of the Peak District National Park. There are walks galore nearby, with well-known spots like Curbar Edge, Padley Gorge and the Longshaw Estate all within a 15-minute drive. Chatsworth, Bakewell and the caves of Castleton can all be on your radar too – not to mention Eyam itself of course, with its intriguing plague museum. The village is about a 20-minute walk away – just enough time to work up a thirst for a cuppa in one of the tearooms or a pint in the pub. There’s also a village shop here and a couple of bus stops for outings further afield. Back at base, you can stash whatever you bought in the shop in the fridge, ready to use in your mini kitchen (which has a cooker, toaster and kettle) later on. Your smart wooden cabin also has a sofa, a TV, a dining table and a comfy bed, as well as a separate ensuite shower room. There’s heating to keep things cosy on chilly days, and a little outdoor area with seating for warmer ones – a lovely spot to relax with a coffee/glass of wine and look out into the surrounding woods.

Local attractions

Start with a stroll to your local village – Eyam is 20 minutes away on foot, and you’ll be able to see the Riley Graves and visit Eyam Museum, both of which will give you an insight into the story of the village isolating itself during the Great Plague to save neighbouring communities. After that, perhaps it’s off to Castleton (25 minutes’ drive) next, to visit one of several show caves around the village, including the Blue John Cave and Treak Cliff Cavern. Or perhaps your taste will be more for Bakewell (20 minutes), which has given its name to both a tart and a pudding. The Chatsworth Estate (20 minutes) has tasty treats too – stop in at the farm shop here as well as visiting the historic house and its gardens. For walks, you’ll have plenty of scenic choices – perhaps the cliffside trail from Curbar Edge (10 minutes), a waterside walk at National Trust Padley Gorge (15 minutes) or a fairly gentle ascent of Mam Tor (half an hour).
