Looking for an easy escape from London? Or perhaps you fancy a rural break that also allows you the option of a day trip to the capital? Or maybe you’ve got your eye on an outing to places like Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn Safari Park? Either way, Town Farm Campsite is in a handy Bedfordshire location about 10 minutes’ drive from Tring. The capital may be a mere 45 minutes away by train, but you’ll feel well away from urban life when you stay at this working farm on the edge of the Chilterns National Landscape. There are gorgeous views over the Vale of Aylesbury and Ivinghoe Beacon from here, and there are heaps of options around for scenic walks. You might like to start with the circular trail around the Beacon (a mile away) before venturing further afield on the Ridgeway Walk or seeking out the Grand Union Canal towpath. The Leach family have been running this farm since the 1930s and they’ve built up a flock of around 1000 sheep, who will be your neighbours while you stay here. There’s also a tennis court and play area on site, and you can also stock up on fresh fruit and veg at the ‘pick your own’ area (open from June onwards). Wifi, laundry facilities, toilets and showers are also available, and you’re welcome to bring a barbecue or light a campfire. For supplies, there’s a food shop a mile away and a supermarket in Tring. The local pub is less than a mile away for easy meals and drinks.

Liked Peaceful site. Shower/Toilet blocks were both good quality…push button showers but they fired out good hot water! Well kept site throughout.

Liked Facilities were great. Clean and well maintained and the staff were very friendly and approachable. Great location to for going out for the day as it’s close to so many fantastic attractions.

Disliked Only thing I didn’t like was that there is absolutely no lighting at night - toilet block is lit but no other lighting. It was pitch black. Didn’t like walking to the toilets before going to bed on my own as a female travelling alone. But that was all I didn’t like.

Disliked Maybe just the time of year with summer coming to an end, but no breakfast bar as advertised on sign boards,
Dogs remain on leads at all times despite the vast space, even okd, friendly dogs.

There are loads of fabulous walks nearby – but if you’d like to up the ante on the rural pursuits, you can head over to Experience the Country (25 minutes’ drive) for things like archery, fly fishing and segway rides, or clamber up to the ziplines and high ropes at Go Ape Woburn (half an hour). If your favourite rural activity is poking around grand country estates, grab your National Trust card and set off to visit Ashridge Estate (10 minutes), with 5000 acres of land and historic monuments including the Pitstone Windmill, or admire the art collections and formal gardens at Ascott (15 minutes). Bletchley Park (25 minutes) is another good choice for a step back in history. This area is stacked with great family days out as well – Mead Open Farm (10 minutes) has some lovely hands-on petting farm activities, or you can go in search of more exotic beasts at Whipsnade Zoo (10 minutes) and Woburn Safari Park (half an hour). For indoor time, try the Natural History Museum at Tring (10 minutes) or keep things cool at Snozone activity centre (35 minutes).
