gem of a site off the beaten track but well maintained.

Aug 2026

Liked Large site with village shop adjacent and plenty of clean toilets and showers. Very quiet countryside location, and the on site wardens do a good job. Wifi is good and the site .has passworded gate entry.

Disliked Trivial thing really, but put some WD40 on the playground swing hinges as they squeak and can be heard from afar!

Total enigma as a campsite but has basic appeal

Aug 2021

Liked This site is a total enigma, it feels like a temporary campsite built quickly and cheaply, yet it has a basic appeal. It is more of a field than a campsite. It is indeed tranquil, provided the Grand Designs style build going on 50ft away isn't mid-hammering, yet that is only during the day and is often quieter than some family sites we've been to. The Polish builders are friendly and it was fascinating to see what will be a stunning large property being built before our eyes. The facilities are simply 1 toilet, 1 basin, 1 shower combined in a single chipboard box, but they're very well finished and certainly clean. There is a washing up sink behind the block - it is mentioned on this site's description (so was the wi-fi but that doesn't exist) so I guessed it would be where the hot water was and found it, but others didn't until we told them, as there are no signs anywhere - including to the entire site itself. Forget the compost toilet and 2nd shower at the bottom of the field as they're even more basic. No shop, no reception, nothing else but a few electric hookups with water taps, but it's very, very cheap so you can't complain at what is provided for the price. There are anthills where tents are to be pitched so watch out on arrival where you choose, and the grass is more stubble than close-mown so make sure your groundsheets are thick ones. The sun rises beautifully in the east and sets in the west with views of both and the surrounding countryside is indeed stunning. We saw lots of wagtails, many other birds swooping over the fields and the odd hare in the morning so the wildlife like it and we liked them. The site is reached by a long concrete grid system of private roads (the whole area apparently was some sort of post-war nursery plot region built to feed London, but those have gradually become private houses and stables etc over time) so it feels remote even though it's not far off the A11. There are no bins, which means you need plenty of bin bags and remember to reserve space in your boot to take them home. Unless you come in a campervan with electric and a fridge there is nowhere to re-freeze coolbox icepacks, so any more than 3 nights and you'll have to replenish milk and cold foods daily at the shop in the nearby village. We enjoyed our stay and would come again for a quick break, but not over a weekend or bank holiday as any more bookings than the four that were there when we stayed would have meant queues for the toilet/shower/basin cubicle. There are good walks in the area, and Audley End House is very close, as well as Duxford Imperial War Museum, so plenty to do, and the local pub is fab. We took plenty of wine and tinned G&Ts and planned every meal well so we only went out to eat there on our last day. If you arrive at this campsite fully aware of all the above, you'll have an enjoyable, tranquil time for very little money. If you expect even moderate luxury, you won't even be unpacking the car. Your call. We'll certainly come here again for a short break.
